Chapter 2Joyce dumped her bag on the table and sat down heavily. “Yo.” Isabel said behind her. “Don’t disturb me. Didn’t sleep well last night. Super sleepy now…” Joyce said as her head fell towards her table. “Wah… Good student Joyce, what have you been doing last night?” Isabel placed her hand on Joyce’s shoulder. “Nothing…” Joyce mumbled. Isabel reached out her hand and rubbed Joyce’s head. “Stop! My hair!” Joyce looked up immediately and shouted. “What did you do that for?” Joyce grumbled and took out her comb. “Now I have to retie my hair.” Isabel shook her head and went back to her seat. “Good morning!” Jun Wei said cheerily as he stepped into the class. A few boys replied him as he walked towards his seat. “How’s your hand?” Joyce asked. “It’s okay now.” Jun Wei replied with a smile. “Don’t act hero if you are going to get yourself injured.” Joyce said cheekily. “I wouldn’t get injured if someone had been more careful.” Jun Wei smiled and replied back. Joyce pretended to pout and the both of them giggled. ‘Hmm… There’s obviously something going on between these two.” Isabel thought behind Joyce and Jun Wei. ‘I shall be a match-maker and pair the both of you up!”
Soon, Jun Wei and Joyce got along so well that they became close friends. “And she just lay there as if it wasn’t embarrassing enough!” Joyce exclaimed.
“Yeah, that scene was so idiotic!” Jun Wei said from the other side of the line.
“Joyce! Joyce!” Mrs Lim shouted loudly.
“Opps! My mother’s calling me. Got to hang up now!” Joyce hurried and said.
“Okay. Bye!”
“Bye!” Joyce cut off the call with a ‘click’. “Yes my dearest mother?” Joyce emerged from her room and said to her mother. “Come help me wash these vegetables.” Mrs Lim handed Joyce a plastic bag. Joyce opened up the bag and started washing the vegetables. “You seem to be chatting with Jun Wei a lot. The both of you are always on the phone.” Mrs Lim started. “You like him?” Joyce blushed and nodded her head. “Why so shy? It’s normal for girls your age to fall in love. Does he know?” Mrs Lim stopped what she was doing and concentrated on Joyce. Joyce bit her lips and shook her head. “You must tell him quickly! Don’t wait until he goes steady with another girl!” “Mummy…” “You don’t mummy me. You must tell him you like him!” Joyce kept quiet and continued washing her vegetables. Seeing that Joyce remained silent, Mrs Lim took it that she understood and smiled happily.
“If Joyce found out she’ll definitely hit the roof!” Isabel laughed and said to her phone.
“Yes Isabel dear. I’ll keep you updated. Got to hang up now.” Mrs Lim replied.
“Okay. Goodnight auntie!” Isabel’s cheery voice replied and hang up. Mrs Lim smiled and put down the receiver. “Who are you talking to just now?” Mr Lim emerged from the bathroom. “Isabel.” Mrs Lim said secretly. Mr Lim looked at his wife, puzzled. “Lady’s secret. You don’t have to know.” Mrs Lim smiled and went to living room, leaving Mr Lim alone in their bedroom.
“Where are we going now?” Joyce and Isabel had decided to make full use of the weekend and hit the malls together to get some awesome outfits. “How but going for lunch? I’m hungry.” Isabel rubbed her stomach. “Hahahaha…” Joyce burst out in laughter. “What’s so funny?” Isabel exclaimed and smacked Joyce. “Ouch!” Joyce reached out to hit Isabel and the two girls started chasing each other in the shopping mall. “Hey, careful!” A voice shouted. “Sorry!” Joyce turned immediately to apologise. “Jun Wei?” Joyce stared at the boy standing in front of her. Beside him was a girl who looked like the same age as them. Jun Wei was holding her hand and they looked like a couple. “Jun Wei? Erm…Who’s that?” Isabel finally found her voice and asked. “let me introduce you to this pretty lady here. Annabelle, my pretty girlfriend.”
Isabel’s jaw dropped and Joyce looked at Annabelle. “Hello.” Annabelle opened her mouth and greeted. “Joyce? You okay?” Isabel whispered to Joyce. Joyce shook her head and smiled at Jun Wei. ‘You two look very compatible.” Joyce forced out a sentence. “Thank you.” Annabelle smiled at Joyce sweetly. “Erm… We’ve something on. See you around.” Isabel said quickly and pulled Joyce away. Joyce walked behind Isabel in a daze. “Joyce? Joyce Lim! Are you okay? Let’s go home.” Isabel shook Joyce by her shoulders. Joyce could only nod in approval.

“What happened to Joyce?” Mrs Lim ask as soon as she walked out of Joyce’s room. “We saw Jun Wei and her girlfriend at the mall today.” Isabel explained. Mrs Lim nodded and turned to look at the direction of Joyce’s room. When Joyce and Isabel reached the Lim household, Joyce went back to her room immediately and shut herself in there, leaving Isabel to do all the explanations to a puzzled and curious Mrs Lim. “Poor girl… I told her to tell Jun Wei soon! Now it’s too late…” Mrs Lim sighed and shook her head.
Joyce placed a compact disc into her radio and turned the volume up. Loud music started to blast through the speakers. Joyce jumped onto her bed and covered her face tightly with her pillow. “Ahh!” Joyce started screaming into her pillow. “Ahh!” Joyce screamed with all her might. She wasn’t afraid to let her mother hear her for the pillow muffled her screams and the loud music covered her screams. Just then, someone knocked on her door.
Joyce shuffled her feet towards the door. “Joyce, are you alright?” Mrs Lim asked as soon as Joyce opened the door. “Yeah.” Joyce jumped back onto her bed and tried pretending to be reading her magazine. “How can you concentrate with such loud music on?” Mrs Lim saw through Joyce’s acting and turned off the radio. “Mother!” Joyce snapped, irritated. “Can you please just leave me alone?” Mrs Lim shook her head and closed the door lightly as she walked out of Joyce’s room.
