Chapter 6
“May I know who is the person who will be receiving this gift?” Joyce turned herself back into ‘working mood’ and asked.
“I’m intending to give it to my sister as a birthday present.”
“Can you tell me how old is she?”
“Roughly around two years your junior.”
“Please wait while I bring out a item that might be suitable.” Joyce bowed and walked into the store room. When she came out again, she was holding a beautiful off shoulder dress. “This might be suitable.” Joyce smiled and started introducing the dress. “Please wrap it up for me.” Joyce nodded and went to the counter immediately. “Erm, may I have your name? I’m Wilson.” Joyce looked up and stared at Wilson. “I’m Joyce.” She replied and quickly place the folded dress in to a box. “Are you paying by cash?” Joyce asked as she placed the box into a shopping bag. “Credit card.” Wilson handed her a card and smiled. ‘She’s pretty cute actually.’ “Please come again!” Joyce said cheerily as she handed Wilson the bag. “I’ll be studying at The Academy from next semester onwards. I hope to be great friends with you.” Wilson said as he took the bag. “This is my number. Do call me when you’re free okay?” Wilson and pressed a note into Joyce’s hand and ran out of the shop so quickly that Joyce could not react. “Wilson…” Joyce looked at the piece of paper in a daze.

“Should I contact him? Or should I just ignore him?” Joyce paced up and down in her bedroom. “Call? Or don’t call?” Joyce held the phone in one hand and Wilson’s number in the other. “Call!” Joyce started to punch in the numbers. “Or better not.” Her finger moved over the cancel button. “What am I afraid of? Just call!” Joyce nodded and took a deep breathe. She punched in the numbers quickly and held the phone beside her ear. It kept ringing and ringing and ringing. Finally, the call was picked up. Joyce was about to open her mouth to speak when she heard the message. “You have reach voice mailbox number…” Joyce cut off the call and threw the phone onto her bed. “So much for asking me to call you when you don’t answer. Nah, forget it. I’m going to have a relaxing shower.” Joyce shook her head as she walked into the bathroom.

Joyce was woken up by the ringing of her phone. “I don’t even know this number.” Joyce grumbled as she checked the caller id. She was about to go back to sleep when she suddenly found the number familiar. “Wilson!” Joyce jumped up and rushed to answer the phone. “Hello? Is this Joyce?” Wilson’s voice streamed into her ear. “Uh huh.”
“Sorry for calling you so late. I went out just now and left my phone at home. I just saw the miss call so…” Wilson’s voice got softer and softer. “I’m sorry if I woke you up. It’s kinda late now…”
“It’s okay.” Joyce cut in.
“I’m relieved then. I was worried that I woke you up.”
“Nah, no problem.” Joyce smiled and replied.
The both of them chatted throughout the night and their relationship deepened at a amazingly fast speed.

----------

“Wilson!” Joyce waved and shouted. Wilson turned and smiled when he saw Joyce. “The weather’s pretty good today.” Wilson commented. “Yup. Perfect for doing my holiday assignment!” Joyce smiled and showed Wilson her bag. “Thanks for offering to be my model.” Joyce said as she started to take her drawing materials. “Don’t mention it. I know how difficult it is to find someone that is willing to stay still for hours.” Wilson laughed and walked over to a bench. “Is this pose okay?” Wilson shouted as he positioned himself on the bench. Joyce gave him a thumbs up sign and got to work sketching.

“I want to take a picture there!” A girl pointed at the park and pulled the guy’s hand. “Let’s go there.” The girl looked at him with her big and round eyes. “I simply can’t refuse when you give me that look.” The guy sighed. “Yay!” The girl jumped up and down and dragged the guy towards the park.

Joyce concentrated on her sketch and started filling in the colours. She must admit that Wilson is a very good model. He hadn’t moved a single inch the whole morning. ‘I’ll treat him to lunch later.’ Joyce decided as she continued with her work.

“Smile!” The guy shouted at the girl. “Peace!” The girl smiled obediently. “How is it?” She ran over to look at the picture. “It’s pretty! No doubt you’re the best photographer!” She smiled and pecked the guy’s cheek. “Alright, let me take a few shots of the scenery since we’re here.” “Aww…You workaholic. Can’t you enjoy your holiday without thinking about work?” The guy continued walking, oblivious to the girl’s wails. “This is a chance too good to miss. Just keep quiet and let me do my work okay.” The guy took a few shots. “I’m going over there to take a few pictures.”

Joyce hummed as she colored her drawing. ‘She looks so pretty when she’s drawing.’ Wilson thought as he looked at Joyce work. ‘She seems to be able to turn everyone’s attention towards her.’ Joyce shouted suddenly, pulling Wilson out of his thoughts. “I’m almost done! Just a bit more!”

‘The scenery here sure is great. How I wish that I lived here.’ The guy gasped as he took pictures. Just then, he saw a attractive lady who was drawing through his camera lens. “Oh my gosh…She’s beautiful!” He walked slowly towards the girl, as if he’s afraid that he’ll scare her. When he’s near enough to get a clear view of her features, he could not help gasping. “She’s a beauty!” He took a picture. And another. And another.

Joyce looked up suddenly and stared at the person who was taking her picture. “Hey!” Joyce shouted, startled. Wilson stood up from the bench and ran over. “What are you doing?” He demanded. The girl ran over when she heard the shouting. “Sorry! Jun Wei is always like this when he’s too engrossed in taking photographs. We’re very sorry!” The girl explained. “Jun Wei?” Joyce stared at the guy who stood before her. “Can’t be…You can’t be…” Joyce turned and started to pack her stuff. “You know our Jun Wei?” The girl asked curiously. “I had a classmate who was named Jun Wei when I was in secondary school.” Joyce finished packing and said. “Secondary school? Could you be…” The girl gasped. “Joyce! You’re Joyce Lim. Right?” The girl said and reached one hand towards Joyce. “How do you…” Joyce stared bewildered at the girl. “I’m Isabel you dumb dumb! Don’t you remember your best friend in school?”
