Chapter 11
Joyce kept smiling to herself as she painted her picture. Betty stole glances at Joyce whenever she can, trying to get her attention. “Psst! Joyce!” Betty whispered. Joyce continued to paint her work, not noticing Betty at all. “Is there anything wrong?” Mr Griedel’s voice boomed beside Betty. Betty snapped her head up, and immediately shook her head. “Nno no sir… Nno nothing…” She stammered. However, Mr Griedel’s loud voice seemed to have attracted Joyce’s attention. She turned to look at Betty, her eyes filled with concern. “What’s wrong?” She whispered as softly as she could when Mr Griedel walked away. “I’ve been calling you all morning! Didn’t you hear me?” Betty replied. “You did?! I guess I’ve been to engrossed in my painting. I haven’t noticed.” Joyce answered sheepishly. “UH HUH! I’ve caught you this time! The both of you, stay back after classes to clean the room as punishment!” Mr Griedel’s voice suddenly rang out loudly. The whole class turned to the direction where Mr Griedel was pointing. Joyce tried to hide her face behind her canvas and Betty’s face flushed deep red.

“Argh.” Betty grumbled as she carried the pail of dirty water she had just used to mop the floor. “I’m not any better here so don’t grumble.” Joyce said as she sneezed. “I’d much rather tidy up the storeroom!”
“Such a dusty one? I‘m very much willing to trade…”
“Uh…Well, umm… I’ve to change my water.” Betty said and practically ran out of the classroom, nearly bumping into Wilson. “Whoa!” Wilson said, startled by Betty who almost poured the bucket of murky water over him. “Careful!” Wilson shouted after her. “Ah-choo!” Joyce sneezed again. “God bless you.” Wilson said and slipped his hands around Joyce’s waist. “Ahh… Let me go… We’re in school now…” Joyce said and struggled to free herself from Wilson. “Not letting go till you give me a kiss.” Wilson said and pouted. “Wilson…” Joyce gave up, and brushed her lips lightly against his. “Hmm… Not good enough, but it’ll do for now.” Wilson smiled, contented. “I’ll help you out.”

Wilson held onto Joyce’s hand tightly. “Why are you holding onto me so tightly?” Joyce wondered. “I don’t want you to run away.” Wilson replied. “Haha.” Joyce dismissed it as a joke. “I’m serious.” Wilson stopped walking and turned to face Joyce. Joyce could sense the seriousness coming from him. “Wilson, I won’t go anywhere else without you.” Joyce got serious too. “I promise.” Joyce suddenly embraced Wilson tightly, and gave him a passionate kiss. Wilson hugged her back even tighter and responded to her kiss. They could hear cars honking and angry drivers shouting at them for standing in the middle of the road but it all sounded miles away. Someone started to cuss loudly. Joyce finally broke away from the kiss. Wilson covered her hand with his and ran to the pavement, laughing. Joyce laughed too as she thought of what she just did. Suddenly, happiness seem to be easily within reach.

Wilson suddenly stopped in his tracks and stood staring at one of the dress on display on a shop window. Joyce immediately thought of Wilson’s sister. ‘Ahh… He must be thinking of buying that dress his sister…’ Joyce thought and smiled at the dress. It was a beautiful off shoulder dress with lace around the bottom of the dress. The dress was a beautiful shade of light green and sky blue, and looked refreshing. Wilson walked into the shop and asked for the dress. Joyce walked in slowly and browsed at the rest of the dresses. The green-blue off shoulder seem to be the only dress which attracted both Wilson’s and Joyce’s attention. In contrast to that dress, all other dresses looked a lot duller despite the vibrant colours. Wilson walked over to Joyce with that dress. “Try it on.” He said smiling. “Huh? Me?” Joyce pointed to herself. “Yes, you.” Wilson laughed and pushed her into the changing room. Joyce stood in the changing room with the dress in her hands, stunned. “Could it be… This dress is for me?”

The dress fitted Joyce perfectly, as if it was made for her. Joyce looked at herself in the mirror. She seemed different somehow… “A lot more attractive than the usual me, I must say.” Joyce whispered as she turned to view herself this way and that. “Are you done?” Wilson called out. Joyce opened the door and stepped out. Wilson gaped at Joyce. Even the shop assistants look wide-eyed at Joyce. “Do I look… Okay?” Joyce said carefully. ‘Why is everyone looking at me this way? Do I look ugly in this?’ Thoughts raced through Joyce’s mind and she became self-conscious of her appearance all of a sudden. “You look… So beautiful…” Wilson whispered and walked towards her. Turning her this way and that, he couldn’t take his eyes off her. “You’re like… An angel…” Joyce brimmed with happiness. “Mister, you’re girlfriend looks so good in this dress. Why don’t you buy it for her?” The assistant came forward and suggested. Without letting Joyce out of his sight, he paid for the dress and pulled her out of the shop. Joyce didn’t even have a chance to change back to her clothes. “You’re so pretty in this… I don’t want you to change.” Wilson explained. As the both of them walked down the street, passer bys turned to steal glances at the perfect couple. The guy looking so gentlemanly in his suit jacket paired with jeans and the lady looking so demure and refreshing in the off shoulder. The both of them seem to shine a radiant gold amongst all the passer bys…

“Don’t worry… I’ll help you in whatever ways I can…” Isabel said, her hand gently touching Jun Wei’s face. Jun Wei snored in answer and tossed. Isabel stood up and kissed him. “As long as you’re happy, I’ll be happy too…” Isabel left the asleep Jun Wei in the room and walked out of the bedroom. She took out her mobile phone and dialed Joyce’s number. After a few rings, Joyce answered. “Hello?” Her crisped voice traveled into the receiver. “This is Isabel. I have to meet you for something important. I must tell you this personally.” Isabel said, trying to sound as firm as possible. “But I’m outside with Wilson now… Or would you mind if you come here? We’re at a coffee house now…” Isabel took down the address and hung up. “Jun Wei… Sleep well… When you wake up, everything is going to be very different. I’ll make sure you get your happiness.”
