Chapter 13
“Jun Wei, wake up! Please!” Joyce cried as she ran along with the nurses who are pushing Jun Wei into the lobby. “Jun Wei, you must wake up…” The lift opened and Joyce held Jun Wei’s hand tightly. Just then, some one bumped into her and she turned around sharply. “Wilson! Wilson!” The lady who bumped into Joyce had her back towards her. Joyce caught a glimpse of the man who was lying on the bed that is being pushed in the other direction. “Wilson?” Joyce gasped. She felt the Jun Wei’s hand slipping from hers. “What do I do now? Is that really Wilson?” “Miss, please let of the patient’s hand. You are interrupting us and precious minutes are ticking away.” The nurse said, frustrated. Joyce snapped back into reality and continued running with the nurses.

Outside the operation theatre, Joyce paced up and down uneasily. “Wilson… Wilson…” Joyce mumbled. She raced to the nearest phone and punched in a string on numbers. “Isabel, come quickly! Jun Wei is injured! I’m at the General Hospital now. Please come to operation theatre 3 quickly!” Joyce hung up the phone before Isabel could reply her. Joyce ran quickly in the direction which Wilson was being pushed to just now. “Operation theatre 5, operation theatre 6...” Joyce was about to run to the next operation theatre when she spotted the lady who bumped into her. “Miss, are you the one who came with Wilson?” Joyce grabbed the lady by the shoulders and shook her violently. “Miss, what do you think you’re doing? Let me go.” The lady pushed Joyce away. “Please, tell me. Is Wilson inside this theatre now? What happened to him? Is it something very serious? How did he get hurt?” Joyce bombarded the lady with questions. “Yes, it is Wilson that’s inside. He was knocked over by a car. I do not know how is he’s injuries. Anyway, who are you?” The lady eyed Joyce from head to toe. Joyce finally gave a proper look to the lady in front of her. “You look familiar… Very familiar…” Joyce whispered. “What are you talking about?” The lady snapped impatiently. “If you’re done, please leave immediately. I’m flustered enough.” The lady continued. “You are… You are… Anna! Is your name Annabelle?”

“How did you know my name?” Annabelle eyed Joyce suspiciously. “No, you’re mistaken. I’m not trying to harm or harass you. You remember Jun Wei don’t you? We met in a mall a couple of years ago.” Joyce finally remembered Annabelle. “Jun Wei? You are…” Annabelle racked her brain too, trying to recall Joyce’s name. “I’m sorry. I can’t remember your name.” She eventually gave up. “I’m Joyce. We met a long time ago. About seven years I think?” Joyce explained slowly to Annabelle. “Ahh, I have a vague idea of you now! You’re that girl? Gosh, you have a real good memory!” The corners of Annabelle’s lips went up slightly. “Heh hehs.” Joyce scratched her head. Suddenly, she remembered something. “By the way, why are you the one who sent Wilson here? And I heard you calling his name just now… Are you his friend?” Joyce asked. “Actually, ex girlfriend would be a better word to use…”

“Ex… Girlfriend?” The words came out of Joyce’s mouth in broken bits. Annabelle laughed uneasily. “Um, what about you? Are you related to him?” “I’m his…” Should I tell her that I’m with Wilson now? “His current girlfriend.” Joyce finally squeezed the words out of her mouth, trying to sound as confident as possible. “Oh my…” Annabelle gaped. She sat down quietly, and patted on the empty sit beside her. Joyce walked over and sat down too. The two sat side by side quietly, waiting for Wilson to come out from the operation theatre…

----------

Jun wei opened his eyes with much difficulty and tried to position himself into sitting position. “Joyce?” He reached out a shaking hand towards her. Isabel whipped her head up suddenly, and looked at Jun Wei happily. “Thank goodness, you woke up!” She cried. “Isabel…” Jun Wei’s hand drooped back onto the bed. Isabel could see that Jun Wei was disappointed. ‘Is it because the first person he saw after he woke up is me and not Joyce? ‘ Isabel stood up, trying to hide her emotions. “I’ll get the doctor here.”

----------

Wilson’s eyes opened suddenly and he tried to sit up. “Ouch! ****!” He cussed loudly. “Are you alright?” Annabelle walked over to Wilson’s bed. “Annabelle? Why are you here? Where’s Joyce?” Wilson asked anxiously. “I was the one who called for an ambulance. Joyce went to the ladies…” Before Annabelle could finish her sentence, Wilson had pushed aside his blanket and is trying to stand up. “NO!” Annabelle rushed to Wilson’s side and immediately got him into sleeping position again. “You mustn’t move! You had nearly 20 stitches on your stomach!” Annabelle waved her fist and pretended to hit him. “Wow! I can brag to others then. I had nearly 20 stitches eh!” Wilson jokingly replied. “Hmph. Can’t stand you.” Annabelle shook her head. This Wilson… Still as playful and childish as before. Exactly the reason why she had broke up with him.

“Wilson! You’re awake!” Joyce shouted and ran to Wilson’s side. “Who are… You?” Wilson opened his eyes to their limits and stared at Joyce. “Wilson? Don’t scare me… Don’t you remember me?” Tears brimmed in Joyce’s eyes. “You can’t forget me… No…” Suddenly, Wilson reached out a hand and pulled Joyce into his embrace. “I almost can’t recognize you! My, how did my pretty girlfriend turn into this state? You look so pale and thin!” Wilson whispered. “You… You’re bad! Bad! Bad!” Joyce rained her small fists on Wilson’s shoulder. Wilson laughed and Annabelle cleared her throat, feeling embarrassed. “You know, you really shouldn’t lean against Wilson so much. He had so many stitches after all…” Annabelle’s voice trailed off. Joyce gasped and pulled away from Wilson. “I totally forgot! How’s your wound? Does it hurt?” Annabelle shook her head, not knowing whether to laugh or to cry. This two really is the perfect couple.

----------

“Say ‘Ahh…’ “ Joyce pressed the spoon lightly against Wilson’s lips. He opened his mouth and gulped down the porridge obediently. “Another mouthful.” Joyce continued to feed Wilson his porridge this way, much to Annabelle’s discomfort. “Excuse me, I’m going to the washroom.” Annabelle excused herself and quickly walked out of the ward. “This couple…” Just then, she spotted Jun Wei walking down the corridor dressed in a patient’s outfit. “Jun Wei?” She called out, not sure if she was right. Jun Wei looked into her direction and stood still. “Annabelle… I never imagined that I would meet you again after so many years! And at the hospital of all places!” Jun Wei exclaimed. “Is this some kind of joke? First Wilson, and now you. Is this meet-your-ex boyfriend-week or something?” Annabelle said in amazement. Jun Wei’s face appeared to be covered with question marks, not understanding what Annabelle meant. “Never mind. Let’s find a place to sit down and chat.”
