Chapter 19
“Jun Wei is back!” Wilson pointed to the figure running towards them. Isabel stood up immediately, letting her magazine slip and drop onto the floor. “I’m back.” Jun Wei said in between gasps. “Well?” Isabel crossed her arms. “I figured you don’t need anything else other than me.” Jun Wei reached for her hands. “This is beautiful…” Joyce whispered. “I wonder if it was like this too when you proposed to me…” Wilson smiled and hugged Joyce tightly. “Guess so.” He pecked her lightly on her cheeks. “Aww… Jun Wei!” Isabel exclaimed and threw her arms around Jun Wei. “I’ve something for you.” Jun Wei pulled Isabel off and produced a ring. “I can’t propose without a ring… So…” Isabel stared at the ring. “You bought this? Then isn’t it counted as cheating?!” Isabel shouted while pointing at the ring in Jun Wei’s hand. “No doubt he’s Jun Wei. So smart!” Joyce stifled her giggles. “You’re cheating!” Isabel continued to shout to at Jun Wei. “Liar!”

Isabel continued to pout and ignore Jun Wei. “Isabel…” Jun Wei tugged at her sleeve. “Isabel…” He purposely dragged the last syllabus of her name, making it sound mushy. “You’re making my name sound disgusting!” Isabel snapped and pulled her sleeve out of Jun Wei’s reach. “You guys are on a plane! Stop fighting!” Joyce hissed at the couple beside her. “You’re just jealous that I’ve got company.” Isabel grinned. “Bet you’re thinking of Wilsonnie eh?” Isabel giggled at the nickname she had for Wilson. “Hey!” Joyce snapped her book shut and threw it towards Isabel. Jun Wei reached for the flying book and caught it neatly with his right hand. “Two against one! No fair!” Joyce protested. “Miss, will you mind keeping your volume down? You’re disturbing my sleep!” The lady sitting beside Joyce snapped angrily. “I‘m… I’m very sorry…” Joyce immediately apologised. Isabel giggled in Jun Wei’s arms and threw Joyce a victorious look.

Joyce stood in front of her flat, feeling uneasy and afraid all of a sudden. It has been so long… I wonder how they look like now… Grey hair, with plenty of wrinkles? She reached into her bag for the keys she had not used for a few years. What am I afraid of anyway? This is MY home. She mustered up her courage and poked the key into the lock. ‘Click!’ The door clicked open when Joyce turned the key. “June? Is that you?” The voice of a lady called out from the kitchen. “Mum! It’s me!” Joyce fought back her tears. “I’m Joyce!” She heard something clattering in the kitchen. “Mum! Are you okay?” She raced into the kitchen to find her mother picking up the plates she had dropped. “Joyce… It really is you!” Mrs Lim exclaimed. “My daughter…” Tears started to flow down Mrs Lim’s cheeks. “Mum!” Joyce hugged her mother tightly. It feels so good to hug mum again. It feels so good to be home again.

“My daughter has grown so much!” Mr Lim exclaimed for the nth time during dinner. “Dad, you’ve said that plenty of times already!” Joyce laughed. “June should be back anytime now. Why don’t you wait in her room and surprise her? She doesn’t know you’re back yet.” Mrs Lim suggested. “Great idea!” Joyce hurriedly pick up her shoes and pulled her luggage into June’s room. “All set!” She shouted. Her parents nodded their head. Just then, the front door opened. June is home…

“Mum, I’m home!” June kissed her mother. “Good girl. Go change out of your clothes and come help me lay the table.” June smiled at Mrs Lim sweetly. “Yes madam!” She said cheekily. “That kid…” Mr Lim laughed as June went into her room. Soon, they heard a shriek and June came running out of her room at top speed. “There’s a girl in my room!” She pointed towards her room. “That’s your sister, stupid!” Mrs Lim finally let out her laughs and leaned against the table for support. “Sis? She’s back?” June stared into air with a dazed look on her face. “Ya, your lovable sister is back!” Joyce jumped on June, scaring her again. “You’re really back?” June reached out her hands and pinched Joyce’s cheeks. “Really her?” She pulled hard at Joyce’s cheeks. “It hurts!” Joyce pushed June away. “Is this the way to treat someone you haven’t seen for years?” Joyce grumbled and rubbed her cheeks furiously. “You’re really back!” June hugged Joyce so tightly that she choked. “Lemme go…” Joyce struggled. “You’re killing me…”

“How can you go overseas for so long and not contact us?” June exploded. “I didn’t want you guys to worry and think about me all the time.” Joyce sipped her fruit punch. “You make us worry more!” June continued to shout her replies. “Girl, sit down… You’re disturbing everyone with your voice… So loud…” Mrs Lim pulled June into the seat beside her. “Aww… Sis!” June reached over to hug Joyce once again. “Let me go…”

“So… You came back only to tell us that you’re gonna get married?” June flipped over in her bed. “Yeah. I need permission.” Joyce mumbled, feeling her eyelids slowly closing. “Don’t you miss us at all? You came back only when you need permission?” June appeared frustrated. “Let’s talk tomorrow okay? I’m really tired from all this flying…” Joyce managed a reply despite the fact that her body wants to sleep. June stared at the delicate features of her sleeping sister, feeling hurt. “Is getting married so much more important than us?”

“Morning!” Joyce said cheerily and sat down at the dining table. “How did you sleep last night? It must be quite uncomfortable since you haven’t slept there for years.” Mrs Lim asked while she busied herself with breakfast. “Nah, I fell asleep immediately.” Joyce grinned and reached for a piece of bread. “No, you have to wait for everyone to be here.” Mrs Lim turned around and smacked Joyce. “Do you have eyes growing on your back or something?” Joyce rubbed her hand and grumbled. “I brought you up, how can I not know what’s going through your mind.” Mrs Lim laid down the plates and walked out of the kitchen. “I’m going to wake your father and sister. Meanwhile, no eating yet!” Mrs Lim reminded just as Joyce stuffed a sausage into her mouth. “You!” Mrs Lim threw up her hands, giving up. Joyce giggled at the sight before her. There’s no place like home…
