Chapter 20
June stared at Joyce's back as she packed her clothes into the cupboard. “June.” Joyce whirled around and sighed. “You’ve been staring at me all these time. What’s wrong?” She sat down beside June and reached for her hand. “Have you told mum and dad about your real motive for coming back this time?” June slipped her hand out of Joyce’s and pretend to reach for her lip gloss. “No. I’m thinking of telling them later. Don’t want them to misinterpret and all that.” Joyce tried again to bring the gap between herself and June closer. “I see. I’m going out for a while.” June stood up and left Joyce feeling bewildered in the room. “What’s wrong with her…”

“Mum, can you come out with me for a bit?” June appeared at the kitchen, her face full of emotions. “What’s wrong honey? Did you fight with your sister?” Mrs Lim placed a comforting hand on June’s shoulder. “Please. Just for a while.” June looked up at her mother with her eyes opened wide. Mrs Lim nodded and threw off her apron. Something must be wrong…

“Mum, the reason why she came back was because she’s getting married and she needs her parent’s consent!” June exploded. “June, what’s wrong with you?” Mrs Lim pulled June close to her. “She’s came back to tell us she’s getting married. She decided to get married, and all she want is for you guys to nod your head and agree with her so she won’t feel guilty about marrying without notifying!” June blabbered on, not giving her mother a chance to speak. “June…” Mrs Lim tried again to calm her daughter down. “After you raised her up, this is how she repays you?!” June shouted loudly and curious passer bys turned their heads to find out what the commotion was about. “Damn it!” June turned around and shouted. Mrs Lim grew red with fury and turned June around to face her. “She’s your sister and I forbid you to talk bad about her, you understand! What she decides we must not object!” Mrs Lim stormed off angrily. “No! I won’t! I won’t! I won’t!” June shouted after her mother. “I’ll never agree!”

----------

“Joyce? What’s wrong? You sound weird.” Wilson asked anxiously and pressed the phone against his ear.
“Nothing.” Joyce sniffed.
“Something must be going on! I know! Don’t try to lie to me, I know you well enough.”
“I don’t know… It feels weird somehow… Like… It’s like I don’t mix in or something… June is acting all weird too…” Joyce broke down and sobbed.
“Don’t cry, don’t worry. I’ll be there soon okay? Everything will be alright. I’ll catch the soonest plane there, I’ll be with you. Let me tell you one good news. My mother has agreed! She’s really happy and excited.”
“Really?” Joyce stopped crying, feeling curious and anxious.
“Of course! Don’t think too much, I’ll go get the tickets for tonight’s plane to Singapore, and before you know it we’ll be together again.” Wilson continued to coax Joyce. “Stop crying okay? You’ll look ugly if your eyes become puffy… And also…”

----------

“Joyce, it’s time for dinner!” Mr Lim poked his head into Joyce’s room. “I’m not hungry.” Joyce’s fingers flew over her keyboard at top speed. “You must eat something.” Mr Lim insisted. “I said I’m not hungry! I’ll eat if I am okay? Just leave me alone for a bit!” Joyce shouted at her father. Mr Lim’s face immediately reflected hurt. Joyce bit her lower lip hard, knowing she had hurt someone with her words again. She stared at her computer screen and tried to focus on typing instead. The door closed softly. Joyce know that her dad has left the room, just as she wished. She stood up and lay down on the bed. This bed feels a bit hard… Maybe it’s because I haven’t been sleeping on it for so many years. Joyce tossed and turned, trying to find a comfortable position. Just then, the monitor beeped. “Wilson!” She jumped up from the bed and dashed to the computer.

Joyce scanned through the message and picked out the keywords. “Okay. I’ll pick you up.” She typed quickly and pressed ‘enter’. The monitor beeped a reply again. “Don’t worry. You’re more important than sleep:D “ She typed the message out and paused. Should I type something so mushy? Her finger hovered over the ‘enter’ button. Just do it! You know that message is what you really think! A voice inside her head urged her on. She closed her eyes and pressed her finger against the button. Wilson’s reply came almost immediately. Joyce giggled, feeling a lot lighter and happier all of a sudden.

“I’m going out.” Joyce announced as soon as she stepped into the living room. “So late? Where are you going? It’s not safe for a girl to be out alone so late at night…” Mrs Lim started, but was cut off by June. “Go if you want to! We don’t care whether you’re dead or alive!” Joyce flinched when she heard June’s words. “June!” Mrs Lim pinched June on the arm as a signal for her to shut up. “I didn’t do anything wrong! What I said was facts! We don’t give a damn what you want to do!” June continued to shout at her sister. Joyce took a few steps back. Perhaps it was wrong for me to come back in the first place... I shouldn’t have came back… Joyce bolted through the front door and hopped onto a cab. “Drive me to Changi Airport.”

Joyce waited anxiously for Wilson to appear. Wilson… Please come quickly… I really need you now… Wilson… The words repeated themselves in her mind. Wilson… You’re the only one I have now… Wilson… “Joyce!” It was the voice she had been craving to hear. “Wilson!” She gasped and looked up immediately. “Wilson!” She flailed her arm wildly in the air. “Joyce!” Wilson ran out and hugged Joyce tightly. “I missed you so much…” He whispered into her ear. “What about you? Did you miss me?” He rubbed Joyce’s back lightly. Joyce nodded her head shyly. “Ah!” She exclaimed all of a sudden. “Your mother!” She looked up from Wilson’s embrace and turned around to find Wilson’s mother. “She didn’t come with me. She’s arriving two days later.” Wilson explained and brought Joyce’s hands to his lips. Joyce nodded slightly and returned to Wilson’s embrace once again. I feel so safe now… Wilson…
