Final Chapter
Joyce sobbed silently, trying hard not to make any noise. “Why? Why did such a thing happen to me? Just when I thought I’d finally found my happiness… Why must you do this to me?!” She yelled towards the sky. “Answer me! Tell me why!” Her sobs escalated into wails as she sat down on the ground hard. “Why…”

Wilson gulped down a bottle a beer of signaled the bartender for another bottle. “Sir, are you sure? You had quite a lot to drink…” The bartender’s concern was cut short when Wilson sent a deadly stare at him. “Even a bartender is against me… No wonder my love turned out to be like this!” Wilson rammed his fist into the table. “To think Joyce is my sister… How can she be my sister?!” Wilson shouted at the bartender. “You! Give me a reason! I want a reason!” Wilson snatched over the bottle of beer in the bartender’s hands and poured the bitter drink into his mouth. “How I wish drinking beer can give me a solution at a time like this…”

Joyce leaned against the tree, hoping to gain some support from it. “Love… Why is it always so far from me? Just as I think it’s within grasp… Just as I’m about to reach this final destination… Why? Why does it always end up this way?“ Joyce buried her head into her arms. “Perhaps… Fate.”

As Wilson swaggered his way back, he tried to convince himself that he must be happy. “If Joyce sees me like this, it’ll only hurt her more. I must look happy. I must be happy! I found my long lost sister. Be happy, Wilson. Be happy!” Wilson muttered as he walked down the street. A man who was cycling past him turned to look at Wilson. “What are you looking at?!” Wilson shouted at the man. “Haven’t you seen someone being happy over the find of his long lost sister?” Wilson pointed a finger rudely at the man. “I’m happy!” He exclaimed. “Hear that? I said I’m happy!”

Joyce sneaked back to the apartment only after midnight. Opening the door softly, she poked her head in. Seeing that the coast was clear, she quickly made her way back to her room before anyone in the living room spotted her. Heaving a sigh of relief, she closed the door to her room lightly and sat down by her desk. “Wilson… I love you, truly. I appreciate what you have done for me, but I must leave…”

----------

Mrs Lim walked into her eldest daughter’s room dejectedly. “Joyce hasn’t been home the whole night. Wilson came back drunk too. What has become of them?” Sitting down on her daughter’s bed, she fingered the bed sheet. “This bed still feels so warm… It’s like as if she has been sleeping on it…” A tear rolled down her cheek unknowingly. “My daughter… You’ll always be my daughter…” Reaching over to the desk for tissue paper, Mrs Lim spotted the envelope which was lying on the desk…

“Dear! Dear, come look at this! June! Wilson!” Mrs Lim hurried into the living room and shouted as loudly as her hoarse voice could manage. Wilson dashed into the living room, shouting as he came. “Is Joyce back? Where is she?” Mrs Lim passed the envelope to him. “I found this on Joyce’s table when I went to her room just now.”

Wilson… I love you, truly. I appreciate what you have done for me, but I must leave… please forgive me for leaving without biding you farewell, please forgive my selfish actions. I have ran away, again. I guess this is the only thing I am good at - running away when things happen. It happened when Jun Wei slapped me. I just couldn’t stay on after what happened that day. And now, it has happened again. I can’t bear to see you after getting to know about something so big and serious. Perhaps if I was a little stronger, I would have opted to stay on and insist that what your mother, or should I say, my mother had said was a pack of lies. However, I am not that courageous. I am but a mere little girl who is afraid of challenges, who does not know how to stand up for her own rights.

Getting to know you was the best thing that ever happened in my life. You taught me that even a weakling like me can be very brave. You taught me how to be happy, how to laugh again from the bottom of my heart. I always thought that it was fate which brought us together. Bumping into you in the hallway in school, meeting you again in the shop which I work part time at. All these seemed to be planned beforehand, and we are just the cast who is in charge of acting it out. Everything has been arranged by fate, from the very first day we met, until now…

“Perhaps it’s just my life. I have admitted defeat. I have lost to fate… Wilson, promise me you will led a happy life, and you will find someone even better than me and get married. I really can’t face you again, I really can’t bring myself to say goodbye to you face to face. Please forgive me Wilson… My lover, my brother…” Joyce looked out of the window of the plane and held her tears in. I cannot cry. No… I must leave this place happily… I cannot cry. Images of the times she had spent with Wilson flashed through her mind like an old movie.

“Sorry!” Joyce shouted without glancing at the person. “I’m in a rush!” Joyce shouted as she continued to run...
“It’s so cute!” Joyce exclaimed.
“You like soft toys?” Wilson looked at Joyce with a amused look on his face...
“Who did you buy that dress for?”
Wilson remained quiet and stared at the bag he was carrying.
“Who is it for?” Joyce pressed again.
“My sister…” Wilson forced out a reply...
“You agreed! You agreed!” Wilson shouted loudly. Joyce giggled and laughed. Wilson placed Joyce back onto the ground as sudden as he had carried her and took out a jewelry box from his pocket. He kneel down on a knee and opened the box. A beautiful diamond ring greeted Joyce...
“You look… So beautiful…” Wilson whispered and walked towards her. Turning her this way and that, he couldn’t take his eyes off her. “You’re like… An angel…”...
“Wilson! You’re awake!” Joyce shouted and ran to Wilson’s side. “Who are… You?” Wilson opened his eyes to their limits and stared at Joyce. “Wilson? Don’t scare me… Don’t you remember me?” Tears brimmed in Joyce’s eyes. “You can’t forget me… No…”...
“I~ Want~ COFFEEEEEE~” Wilson followed her to the other side of the table and grabbed at the packet. “MISSED!” Joyce grinned and shouted loudly into Wilson’s face...
“Don’t miss me too much okay?” Wilson whispered beside Joyce’s ear. “I should be the one saying that.” She whispered back and giggled. “I really can’t bear to be apart from you for so long. Three whole days!” Wilson groaned...

The images started to flash in Joyce’s mind at a much faster rate, and everything was starting to get blurry. “Wilson, you’ll forgive me right? Wilson…”

Wilson shook the envelope lightly and a ring dropped onto his palm. Under the light, it shone and glittered brightly, also showing off the word which was carved on the ring. “爱” Wilson whispered while staring hard at the ring. He nodded his head slightly and ran his fingertips along the metallic ring. “You want me to give this someone else, right? Someone whom you think will suit me better, the one who is the supposed true love of my life?” Wilson continued to talk to himself. “Fool. You’re really stupid. You’ll be the only one I truly love, regardless whether you’re my sister or not.” June who has been standing beside Wilson all this time reached out a shaking hand and tugged on Wilson’s shirt. “You have really loved my sister with all your heart haven’t you? That is enough.” June’s words startled the family. “Having loved her before… Is enough.” Wilson’s body shook furiously as he swept June into his embrace…

As Joyce’s plane took off, along with her family, her love has been left behind. What had been the happiest period in her life will remain with her always, etched in her body and running through each and every vein. A beautiful love story where the female and male leads don’t end up together. Pathetic their fate might be, but their love would definitely be the purest of all. The love they had for each other can pass through even the strongest barrier, into the next generation, into the next world.
