Howl 1
“Why can’t we always have what we want in life?” a little girl asked her brother who was 4 years her senior. The boy looked at the girl sadly and shook his head. “I’m afraid we cannot have everything in life.” the boy said. “In order to get some things, you have to sacrifice some others.”
“But why?” the girl was desperate for an answer.
“You’ll know when you grow up. You’ll understand the true meaning only when you grow up…” the boy patted the girl‘s head and sighed. He used to ask that question too. But as he grew up, he finally realized it’s underlying meaning. It is something you will only understand when you’re mature enough in your thinking…

The animosity between Lan Yi Rou and her parents can be felt even by the guards standing outside the dining room. Perhaps many would be fooled into thinking that the Lan Yi siblings led a luxurious life by the grandeur of their mansion. Truth was, they are leading lives which are in their parent’s complete control. “Rou, have the proposal for Tianwu Corp been drafted out yet?” Lan Yi Xuan, her brother and also the one who held the position of the general manager in Lan Yi electronics asked. Lan Yi Rou’s face remain inscrutable as she stood up. “It’ll be out by this afternoon.” having a deadline she needed to meet urgently, this was no time for breakfast. As Rou exited the dining room, Xuan can’t help but feel pain tugging at his heart. He was always able to accept their parent’s decisions readily but for Rou, it was always more difficult. She had ceased to be the happy and carefree girl ever since she understood the meaning of leading life as a Lan Yi member. The smile which hung frequently on her chiseled face had slowly revolved into a frown…

“And so, I suggest that we…” the assistant’s sentence was cut short when Rou slammed her fist onto the table. “You’re just babbling away. Waste of time.” Rou threw the proposal file into the trash can. The assistant grew red with fury and stormed out of Rou’s office. “Useless bums.” Rou muttered as she looked out of her window. Her office overlooked a bridge which was also known as The Artist’s Bridge. Many artists from overseas often gathered at the bridge for it’s dreamland-like scenery. If I’m not Lan Yi Rou, would I be an artist too? Her childhood memories came flooding back to her.

“Young mistress, after lunch would be your piano lesson, and followed by violin lesson.” Housekeeper Zhao smiled towards the little girl in front of him.
“Uncle Zhao, may I have art lessons?” Rou asked.
“I’m sorry young mistress. I cannot decide on that. You’ll have to ask Madam.” Housekeeper Zhao replied with an apologetic look on his face.
Rou sighed and ran off to her brother’s room. “Brother, are you in there?” Rou called out.
A young boy opened the door and pulled his sister into the room gently. “What is it?”
“Why can’t we always have what we want in life?” Rou asked Xuan who was 4 years her senior. Xuan looked at Rou sadly and shook his head. “I’m afraid we cannot have everything in life.” Xuan said. “In order to get some things, you have to sacrifice some others.”
“But why?” Rou was desperate for an answer.
“You’ll know when you grow up. You’ll understand the true meaning only when you grow up…” Xuan patted the Rou‘s head and sighed.

The constant knocking startled Rou as tried to clear her head of past memories. “Come in.” Rou changed into a stern face again as yet another assistant walked into her office with a mountain of files…

“General Manager Lan Yi!” Sheryl pushed opened the door to Xuan’s office.
“Fashion designer Sheryl! What brings you here today? Not busying designing?” Xuan smiled and walked over.
“Can’t I take a short break to visit my boyfriend at work?” Sheryl laughed and kissed Xuan lightly on his cheek. “Anyway, I’m not a full fledge designer yet.”
Sheryl retorted as Xuan sat her down on the couch. Xuan merely laughed in reply as he sat down beside her. Sheryl looked at her troubled boyfriend and immediately knew what was on his mind. “You’re worrying about Rou aren’t you?”
Xuan grinned sheepishly and nodded his head. “The Director has decided to engage Rou to some heir of a company.”
“Engagement?” Sheryl flinched at the word. “Does she know yet?”
Xuan shook his head. “If she’s aware, I wouldn’t be so worried now about her reaction…”

Rou walked out of the meeting room feeling exhausted. As she walked back towards her room, a few assistants were whispering. Foolish people. Do they really think that I can’t hear them? Rou rolled her eyes. Just as she was nearing her office, she saw a few workers moving a bulking looking item into her room. “It’s fragile, be careful!” She could hear her mother’s voice. “Madam.” Rou called out when she saw her mother. “Oh. You’re back.” Mrs Lan Yi glanced at Rou and turned back to the workers. “I’ve just brought a new painting which I think will be suitable for your office…”
“Madam,” Rou cut her sentence short. “I do not like the idea of having paintings in my room.” Rou signaled for the workers to remove the painting from her wall.
“Rou!” Mrs Lan Yi fumed.
“Madam, if there’s nothing else, I’ll see you after work.” Rou hinted for her mother to leave.
“Fine. Come home early.” Mrs Lan Yi got her hint and left with much distaste.
Once the door was closed, Rou collapsed onto her chair and closed her eyes tightly. Perhaps if I wasn’t Lan Yi Rou, I’d be a famous artist now and it’ll be other people who are buying my art pieces. Rou fell back into her endless thoughts and drifted off back to her childhood…
