Howl 3
“Uncle Zhao, may I take the bus tomorrow?” Rou begged.
“I’m sorry, Young Mistress. You may not do so.”
“Why, Uncle Zhao? Why can’t I go to a normal school like other kids? Why can’t I take the bus with them?” Rou recalled the school bus which was beside her car this morning. The school bus seemed lively with so many kids in it.
“I’m sorry, but that’s the way things are arranged.”

Lan Yi Rou continued walking aimlessly, wondering where she could go to. Somewhere far away perhaps… and difficult to locate. Maybe a village? Rou racked her brains for a perfect hiding place. Just then, a bus stopped beside her. Looking up, she realized that she was at a bus stop. Just as well. I’ll just go to wherever this bus takes me then. Rou stepped onto the bus and was amazed at the interior of it. Although it was common to see buses, she had never been in one before. Housekeeper Zhao, or should she say, Madam, forbids her to take buses.

Rou took the last seat by the window in the bus. In her seat, she could see everything happening, and yet nobody could see what she was doing. The seat she was in is probably the best seat in the whole bus. It provided her with the privacy she wants. Rou closed her eyes slowly and leaned against the window. Surprisingly, she did not feel uneasy at the idea of sleeping in a public place. As she thought about the night’s events, Rou slowly drifted into a deep slumber…

Rou woke up with a start when she felt the bus jerk to a stop. It took her a few seconds register the reason she was on this bus. Rou cleared her throat as she stood up. She had not meant to get off only now. Especially since this place seemed to be so rundown. Rou walked down the steps of the bus uncertainly. The bus must’ve traveled quite far. It’s already morning… This place stinks! Rou wrinkled her nose at the stench. Is this some fishing village? She did something she normally wouldn’t have done. She stepped into the place which she thought stank so horribly.

Lan Yi Rou regretted her decision as soon as she stepped in. The smell was revolting. She covered her mouth quickly, trying to stop herself from vomiting. A man walked over to her with lustful eyes. “Miss, feeling sick?” he had a deep and low voice. Rou nodded her head without looking at the man. “Let me help you.” the man reached for Rou’s hand. Rou allowed the man lead her into a house, thinking that he had meant well. Thankfully for this gentleman. If not I’ll probably die outside there… Rou was thinking kind thoughts about the man when he suddenly pounced on her from behind. “Mmmm!” Rou struggled to scream with the man’s hand covering her mouth. “Be quiet, and it’ll be over very soon.”

Fear rushed through Lan Yi Rou as her mind thought of what could possibly happen to her. “Don’t be afraid…” Rou followed the voice of the man and looked at him properly for the first time. Rou got a scare when she saw the man’s wants written across his face. She could feel the man’s wandering hand on her back as she swallowed her saliva. “Don’t…” Rou cried. It was the first time in so many years that she had felt fear. “Don’t touch me!” Rou tried to push the man away, but received a slap instead. Just as Rou thought all hope was lost, the door burst opened.

“Let go of her right now!” the voice belonged to a lady. “I say, LET GO!” the lady charged over with a frying pan.
The man yelped in pain as the pan fell onto his head. Rou took the chance to escape from the man’s clutches and hid her shivering body behind the lady.
“Don’t you dare touch her again!” the lady shouted menacingly before she turned towards Rou. “Are you alright?”

Lan Yi Rou followed behind the lady cautiously, afraid that she would harm her suddenly, just like the man. “You don’t have to be so afraid of me.” the lady chuckled. “The man you saw just now is Old Wang. You’re just unlucky to have met the village’s lunatic.”
Rou’s eyes grew wide open at the word ‘lunatic’. So he is mad…
“You must be new here. I’ve lived here all my life and I have never seen you before.” the lady stopped in front of a beach house. “This is my place. Feel free to live here.” Rou looked at the lady doubtfully. “Don’t worry, I’m not a lunatic like Old Wang. This house you see here is my inn.”

“Where has your sister gone to?” the Director shouted angrily at his son.
“Like I’ve said many times already, I don’t know.” Lan Yi Xuan replied, feeling exasperated.
“How can you assist your sister in running away from home without even knowing where she will be heading?! She is Lan Yi Rou, my daughter and your sister! Do you know how many people out there would be glad to kidnap her?”
“Director…” Sheryl tried to speak up for Xuan.
“You’re in no position to interfere with my family’s business. Xuan, you know fully well that me and your mother do not agree to this girl!” the Director pointed towards Sheryl. Sheryl lowered her head and started biting on her lower lip.
“Director! I will not have you say such things about Sheryl!” Xuan said through gritted teeth.
“And I will not have my son speak to me in such a disrespectful manner. Has being with this lowly-educated girl influenced your mannerisms?” the Director was fuming.
Xuan looked at his father hatefully and held onto Sheryl’s hand. “I had not much manners to speak of in the first place.” Xuan decided to go all out against his father.
“You! Housekeeper Zhao! Throw this girl out of our house right now!”
