Howl 6
“Will I still be able to draw?” Rou asked as she clutched onto her right hand. She had sprained herself when she fallen off the stairs and had her right hand in a cast currently.
“Of course you will.” Xuan ruffled his sister’s hair. “You’ll be drawing before you know it.”
“Really?” Rou looked at her brother happily.
“Why would Xuan lie to you?” Lan Yi Xuan pulled his sister into an embrace.

“What?!” Eric Lu shouted with all his might into the phone.
“I’m sorry, but that’s what my daughter wish for. I apologise for calling off the engagement so suddenly.” Mr Lan Yi said calmly.
“Are you just taking me for a ride?! You’re so gonna pay!” Eric Lu shouted his reply and slammed his mobile phone onto the table.
“Mr Lu…” His secretary called out, her voice shaking.
“Leave my room right now!” Eric Lu pointed towards the door.
“Mr Lu… This is my resignation letter.” His secretary placed an envelope on his desk and scurried out of the room.
Eric Lu stared at the letter and cursed. “I thought I had a chance to revive this company. I guess I was wrong. Lan Yi Rou, how dare you thwart my plans!” He rammed his fist into the wall beside him. “You’re gonna pay!”

Lan Yi Rou stared at the ceiling and blinked. The sky told her that it was nearly dawn. She turned and sighed as she thought of her family. How is Xuan doing now? He’s probably in a lot of trouble for helping me with my escape… And that engagement too… She was about to drift off to sleep when loud knocking rained on her door. “Rou! Rou! Come down for breakfast!” It was Auntie May. Rou sat up in her bed and stifled a yawn. I guess I’d better just focus on the troubles here. Rou shook her head as she got out of bed.

“Rou, come help me with the porridge. I’m going to the back to get some spring onions.” Auntie May handed a ladle to Rou. Rou stared at the ladle and wondered what she should do. “I think I just have to stir…” She whispered and placed the ladle gently into the pot. She was stirring the porridge steadily when her hand came into contact with the side of the pot. Rou screamed in pain and dropped the ladle. “What’s wrong?” Skye rushed into the kitchen to find Rou clutching onto her hand tightly. “Place it under the running water. Quickly!” Skye turned on the tap and stuck Rou’s hand under it. Tears streamed down Rou’s face as she tried to fight back the burning sensation that was slowly eating away at her hand…

“How are you feeling now?” Skye asked. Rou remained silent as she stared at the sea. “You have to speak up! How would I know how you feel if you remain silent the whole time?” Skye sounded exasperated.
“I’m fine.” Rou stood up and walked away from Skye. It hurts… Her mind shouted. No, I’m perfectly fine. It does not hurt at all… She fought against the stinging pain at her hand. She dragged herself along the coast and tried to clear her mind. She gasped in amazement when she saw the scenery in front of her. She had just stumbled upon a perfect painting spot.

Rou hurried back to the place she had just discovered with her art materials in tow. Skye spotted her from a distance and followed behind her quietly. “Where is she going with all that stuff?” His question was soon answered when Rou started to set up her stuff. “She knows how to paint?!” Skye exclaimed. From where he stood, he could see Rou’s actions clearly. Rou was struggling to squeeze a tube of paint onto the palette with only one hand available. The tube slipped out of her hand when she tried to uncap the other tube. Frustration was written all over her face. Skye walked out of his hiding place and picked up the tube with was lying on the ground. “Let me help you.”

Lan Yi Rou turned and dabbed her paintbrush at the palette before turning back to her painting. “Gosh… If I’d known that this would be what I have to do the whole day, I wouldn’t have volunteered my services to you.” Skye rubbed his aching muscle. He has been acting as a stand holding Rou’s palette for her the whole afternoon. Rou ignored his words and continued with her work. “But you sure can paint. I guess I’ve found something that fits your name. You look pretty gentle when you’re painting…” Skye found himself complimenting Rou. He paused suddenly and stared at Rou’s side profile. He had just done something which he normally does not do. He complimented someone. Then, it dawned upon him that this was not the only first. Ever since he met Lan Yi Rou, he has been doing many ‘firsts‘.

Skye plopped down on his bed and laid there, still. “What is going on with me?” he asked aloud. “For the first time, I paid this much attention to a girl. For the first time, I fought with a girl. For the first time, I actually saved someone from danger. For the first time, I had tea in the middle of the night with someone. For the first time…” his voice trailed off. From his window, he caught sight of Rou walking into the inn. “Didn’t she finish painting an hour ago? Why is she coming in only now?” Skye leaned against the window to follow Rou’s figure into the inn. When Rou is finally out of sight, he walked back to his bed and sighed. “This is the end of you, Skye. What are you doing to your life?!” he yelled as he threw his pillow over his head.

Rou closed the door behind her and placed her painting on the table. “It feels good to be able to do something which I’ve yearned to for so many years.” Rou caressed the canvas gently. Suddenly, the image of Skye holding the palette for her flashed through her mind. The corners of her lips went up slightly. “The first person other than Xuan and Housekeeper Zhao who treats me so well.” she went over to her window and tried to peer into Skye’s room. “Lights out? So he’s sleeping already…” Rou felt disappointment rushing through her. “What am I doing?! I’m actually thinking about that conceited freak?!” Rou smacked herself on the forehead and tried to clear Skye’s face from her mind. “Forget!” she commanded as she threw herself into her bed. It was a sleepless night for both her and Skye…
