“Li Yin, are you feeling better today?” Hankyung decided to stop by the hospital during lunch to visit his newfound stepsister. “Han Geng ge ge brought cakes! It’s from that shop you work at!”
“Hankyung, my name is Ri In. Please remember not to speak to me in mandrin anymore.” Li Yin lowered her legs from the bed to walk over to Hankyung.
“Okay, okay! Don’t walk, I’ll go over!” Hankyung rushed to Li Yin’s side and helped her back onto the bed. “Your legs are not fully recovered.”
“I’ve been undergoing therapy. Plus, I figured you’d be too afraid of how I look like now to come over to me. So it’ll probably be easier if I go over, right?” Li Yin stroked her once flawless complexion. It now felt bumpy and rough due to all the stitches. When the bandages were removed, even herself got a bad scare despite having braced herself beforehand. “It’s okay. Aunt Madeline promised to have a good surgeon reconstruct my face. I’ll be the beautiful Ri In before long.”

Sighing, Junsu downed his third cup of black coffee as he focused on his project. He had scoffed when the lecturer announced the topic. ‘My most Precious’. It was not until he finally sat down to brainstorm that he realise it’s not exactly an easy task. ‘Precious? What’s my precious?’ Junsu nibbled on the end of his pencil. “Li Yin…” he rasped subconsciously.
“Yo! The Korean guy is hardworking, isn’t he?” Junsu’s classmate cum roommate sat down opposite him. There is nothing exactly very wrong about him, except that he is too nosy for Junsu’s liking.
“Go away. Precious project.” Junsu spat out in his broken English.
“Whoa, you actually took the project seriously?! Precious project, I can’t wait for your end product. Good luck!” he said laughingly and waved at Junsu. “A certain not-so-hardworking kid like me would be playing basketball!” glaring at him as he walked away, Junsu allowed his thought to return to Li Yin. ‘Maybe I can use Li Yin for this project. Li Yin, my precious…’

Hankyung inhaled deeply before pressing on the doorbell. Greeted by the housekeeper, he introduced himself as Mr Jang and was allowed access immediately. “Young Mistress, Mr Jang has something to pass to you.” the housekeeper reported before taking his leave. Eyeing Hankyung, Yoochun got up and stood before Ye Seul protectively. Smiling gently, Hankyung handed two envelopes over. “Just as well. Since Mr Park is here as well, I’ve saved myself from making another trip then. Printed on the card is the time and date of Miss Zhang’s burial. Please be punctual.” Ye Seul’s tears threatened to spill any minute at the mention of her best friend. For the past two weeks, she has been trying to obtain more information on the accident hoping that Li Yin survived somehow. And her hopes were just dashed by a couple of simple sentences. Placing his arms around Ye Seul to support her, Yoochun nodded his head at Hankyung. “We’ll be punctual.” after obtaining his assurance, Hankyung excused himself and left. Ye Seul’s sobs escalated into wails at the thought of Li Yin being dead. “No!” she chanted repeatedly. “Li Yin…”

Li Yin stared at her reflection in the mirror, feeling disgusted. Staring back at her is not Zhang Li Yin, but a horrible creature. “It’s okay. This is just like how caterpillars become butterflies. I will become the pretty Jang Ri In after my operation.” Li Yin covered her face with a mask. “Sorry Ye Seul, you’re probably feeling terrible now… but don’t worry. After my surgery, I will become your best friend again. Jang Ri In will replace Zhang Li Yin as your best friend.”

Hankyung slumped on the couch after an exhausting day of delivering the cards. Not only were Ye Seul and Yoochun ‘invited’ to the burial, so were Li Yin’s ex colleagues. He cannot comprehend why Li Yin wanted a burial. She had planned all of these, so as to lead everyone into believing that Zhang Li Yin is dead. Why would she do this? She can just tell everyone that Jang Ri In is Zhang Li Yin. Why would she want to make it seem like Li Yin has disappeared from Earth? Also, why did he agree to pretend to be the person-in-charge of her burial? Tired after a day of driving around, Hankyung fell asleep on the couch with his mind still whirling with ‘why?’.

Dressed in all black, the small group gathered around a tomb. From afar, it looked like a mini black ocean. Standing beside the tomb meant for the supposedly ‘dead’ Li Yin, Ye Seul hid her face in Yoochun’s chest and cried bitterly. For the whole of her life, regardless of how upset she is with life as a Han, she has never shed a single tear of agony. ‘I miss you so much, Li Yin… how can you just leave me like this?’ Ye Seul bit on her lower lip to stop herself from shouting. Watching as they lower the coffin and started to shove the soil onto the grave, Ye Seul reached her limits. Pushing Yoochun aside, she raced towards the set of long staircase which leads to the exit…
