Chapter 9: A Complicated Affair

Suggested song/music: The Rainbow Which Will Never Disappear

“Wake up. Li Yin, we’re at the terminal already!” Junsu shoved Li Yin lightly by the shoulders. Li Yin jolted awake and blinked furiously, trying to register what had happened. Watching her rub her eye with a hand and another covering her mouth as she yawned, Junsu laughed. He does not understand why exactly, and what exactly made him laugh, but he just did. The most carefree laugh since Guigui’s departure.

“请不要放开我的双手,不要缺席我的以后. 请留给我慢慢消失的那一道彩虹… (Please don’t release my hands, don’t absent yourself from my future. Please leave for me that rainbow which is slowly disappearing…)” xiaoxi had her eyes closed as a stream of melody flowed around her. Originally sitting, Yunho found himself slowly getting onto his feet. Nodding his head accordingly, he hummed along softly. What a surprise. This jinx of a partner can actually sing. Slowly, he relaxed his tensed body and allowed himself to drown in the music…

The last note lingering in the air, xiaoxi opened her eyes slowly as she brought the microphone away. Yunho let out a wave of applause while smiling enthusiastically. “I just know it! We’re so going to ace the project!” he exclaimed happily. Reminded of the time where she heard him sing and dance in the school’s studio, xiaoxi lowered her head to pause and think. He was right. They’d probably be able to make some nice music together. Without much thinking, she passed the microphone over to him who blinked in surprise. “I haven’t heard you sing properly before. Don’t be too early to make assumptions.” xiaoxi bit on her lower lip and lied. Yunho smirked and took the microphone from her outstretched hand.
“I’ll show you.”

“How far are we from your apartment?” Li Yin whined. They seem to have been walking for a long, long distance and yet, no building is in sight. Li Yin stopped walking and lowered herself to massage her tired legs. Junsu sighed and went over to her, lowering his body with his back to her. “We’re actually not far from my place. But I’ll give you a piggyback ride.” he didn’t know what made him want to offer his back to Li Yin, after his promise to never go near another girl apart from Guigui. Although tempted to give her legs a rest, Li Yin hesitated before shaking her head. “Thanks, but no thanks. C’mon, the sun’s going to set if we just stand around.”

Swinging her leg up onto the comfort of the couch, Li Yin hammered it with her fists. Junsu placed his bag on the coffee table and switched on his laptop. It was his habit, the first thing he does every time he reaches home. Seeing his wallpaper of Guigui flash onto his screen, Junsu let out a satisfied smile. Wondering what could possibly make the blockhead smile, Li Yin peered at the screen over Junsu’s shoulder to see a picture of Junsu and a girl - a very adorable girl. “Junsu loves Guigui, even in death.” Li Yin subconsciously allowed herself to read the words on the picture aloud. The top of the laptop slammed down immediately as Junsu spun around to glare at her menacingly.

“This is my song, and the first time I’ve sung it to anyone other than Li Yin. Be honored!” Yunho proudly declared as he prepared himself to sing live. “My song, Crazy Life.” Xiaoxi raised an eyebrow. ‘Crazy Life? This, I’ve got to hear.’ she was just preparing herself for his song when her father barged in suddenly, his hand entwined to his lover’s. The same couple Yunho saw at the staircase. Xiaoxi jumped up, her eyes burning with fury. “Scram. I don’t want that woman here.” she tried to say as calmly as possible. Yunho crossed his arms as he racked his brains trying to understand the current situation. “Respect your father!” the woman’s shrill voice was plain torture. Yunho shook his head and replaced the microphone on the table. Wrapping his hand around xiaoxi’s shoulder, he steered her towards the door. “It was nice meeting you, Mr Director. Xiaoxi’s staying with me tonight.”

“Staying with you? You’re insane, I can’t.” xiaoxi tried to resist Yunho’s firm grip on her. “I’m a jinx, don’t forget!”
“I’m still in one piece aren’t I? You’re not a jinx,” Yunho said as he stuffed xiaoxi into the passenger seat. Xiaoxi wanted to rebuke him with something, but thought otherwise and relaxed in her seat. Indeed, she can’t stand living in that place anymore, not with her father returning home at odd hours with a different lady by his side each time. Yunho reached over and pressed a button, turning on the radio. Tuning it to his favourite music station, he started humming along to the song which was airing. Xiaoxi peeked at him slightly, stunned at how he can just act like as if nothing has happened.

“Don’t you know how to respect privacy?!” Junsu snarled. Li Yin knew she was in the wrong, but her hardheaded character forbade her to throw in the white towel just so easily. Crossing her arms, she stuck her head high up. Junsu’s face grew distorted as anger engulfed him. “I want you to apologise right now!” Junsu grabbed onto Li Yin’s hand, demanding her to accede to his request.
“I refuse to!” Li Yin spat into his face. “Let go of my hand! Bastards, you bunch of bastards! I just knew it! Guys should NEVER be forgiven! Never!” Li Yin struggled to free herself of Junsu’s grasps. Exerting all of her force, Li Yin flung Junsu’s hand away from hers. Only then did she realise that she has done something without thinking again… she allowed her emotions to take over her body…

“Sorry. I didn’t mean it.” Li Yin’s voice quavered. Junsu knew better than to question her. Although he was greatly pissed by her actions, he thought that the timing wasn’t right for him to ask any questions as it would only serve to agitate her further. “It’s okay. Perhaps you’d like to return home and retire for the day. We can discuss about our project tomorrow. I’ll drive you home now.” without waiting for an answer, Junsu slung Li Yin’s bag over his shoulder and walked towards the exit. “Thank you…” he heard a soft voice utter. “Thanks for everything.”
