Chapter 26: Perhaps

“When I saw you at the orphanage, I was so shocked. I went asking around, and found out that you had been adopted just a day before I was admitted into the orphanage, that’s why I never got the chance to meet you. I questioned nearly everyone, just to know more about you, and why you had returned to the orphanage. When I finally mustered up enough courage to face you again, I saw you crying alone. Right then, I told myself that I have to protect you in the future, regardless what happens. I will never run away anymore, even if it will cost my life, I will save you from future harm…”

Li Yin remained still, in a state of disbelief and shock. “But… I don’t recognise you at all!”
“How can you recognise me when you’ve only seen me with my face bruised up and bloody?” Yunho chuckled bitterly. “The wounds took a long time to heal, and a scar was left on my forehead even though it’s barely visible now.”
Li Yin turned to him curiously and lifted the hair covering his forehead. There was indeed a faint line on his forehead, visible only when Li Yin leaned close to him. The studio door opened abruptly, causing Li Yin to lose her balance and fall into Yunho’s arms.

“Oh, xiaoxi!” Yunho acknowledged her presence immediately when he saw her. Xiaoxi remained fixated at her position by the door, uncertain of whether she has interrupted some romantic moment between Yunho and Li Yin. She shifted her gaze so she wouldn’t have to look at the intimate scene before her. It made her heart race in anger somehow and she didn’t like the feeling. She hated jealousy. “Xiaoxi, don’t be mistaken.” Li Yin quickly recovered her posture and stood up. Grabbing her bag, Li Yin wanted to flee from the room, unable to decide between the reasons for wanting to escape - her inability to comprehend fully the new found truth, or the awkwardness caused between the three. Without uttering a goodbye or taking another glance at them, Li Yin hurried out of the dance studio, walking so fast it seemed like a run.

Walking with his hands stuck in his pant’s pocket, Junsu shouted occasionally for Li Yin. “Zhang Li Yin! Zhang Li Yin~” smiling slightly, he decided that her name sounded sweet and rolled off his tongue so easily he could call her name aloud daily for the rest of his life. A group of girls giggled when they went pass him, finding Junsu adorable and attractive in his snug-fitting plain white t-shirt and pair of jeans, a really ordinary outfit which looks great on the right body. Junsu delivered a charismatic smile before moving away quickly, wanting to locate ‘his Li Yin’ soon.

“Zhang Li-” Junsu’s search finally ended when the girl he has been looking for ran into him as she rounded the corner. Junsu grinned ecstatically and ruffled her long, brown locks of hair. Li Yin struggled to have a clear view of the person ‘attacking’ her in broad daylight, raising her fist to punch to necessary. “WHOA!” Junsu dodged the attack and shimmied his way behind her. “It’s me, Kim Junsu!” he bent over as another punch came his way. The kick which nearly reached his shin stopped in midair as Li Yin realised it was only Junsu. Heaving a sigh of relief, Junsu patted his chest exaggeratingly. “If you had really kicked me with that pointed tip of your stilettos, you’ll probably have to perform alone on the stage since I’ll be in the Intensive Care Unit.”

Swinging her legs as she nibbled on the piece of chocolate, Li Yin smiled. She remembered how Yunho would always be there to pass her a chocolate whenever she’s upset. He would sit beside her and hum a song if necessary. And if she had requested for it, he would even dance a silly dance for her. Now that she thought about it, it did seemed that everything he has done ever since they met was to protect her, and make her happy. However, as soon as she thought of how she could’ve actually left the demon’s den earlier had Yunho helped her when he saw the incident, she felt surging anger. Perhaps she wouldn’t be hearing impaired now if Yunho offered his assistance when he had the chance. Perhaps… perhaps… endless ‘perhaps’ ran through her mind, as her teeth forcefully crunched the chocolate in her mouth.

Pulled back to earth by a sudden flash, Li Yin snapped her head towards her right to find Junsu taking photographs of her with his mobile phone. Her eyes enlarged in surprise as she tried desperately to stop Junsu. “Hey! I didn’t give you permission to take my pictures!” Li Yin shouted as she fought for the sleek communication device. Junsu grinned before reaching out his spare hand to tickle her. Li Yin squealed as he caught her while she was oblivious to everything else apart from deleting those photographs Junsu had taken. He suddenly leaned close to her ear, whispering in his soothing voice. “Perhaps you would be happier if you learn to look at the bright side.”

Xiaoxi dropped the takeaway lunch into Yunho’s hands silently. He raised an eyebrow, not quite understanding why she went to buy more food when she had prepared sandwiches. She pretended not to notice him and took out a sandwich from the container in her bag. Before she could take a bite of it, Yunho had leaned over and chewed off a big portion of the sandwich, rendering her speechless. “Don’t read too deeply into what you saw earlier. It was an accident.” Yunho assured her before she even told him she was feeling uneasy and a tad jealous. He reached into xiaoxi’s bag for her water bottle to wash down the bread. It all happened so naturally, without any awkwardness. Having drank his fill, Yunho flashed a dazzling smile at her. Xiaoxi understood. She has to learn to trust people.
