Chapter 3: Strong Distaste

Stepping into VPT, Zai Zhong felt the strong sense of a homely ambience gushing to him. Something which has been absent in the mansion where Jun Xiu lives - the gigantic bird cage whereby he is trapped for life. Greeted by an amiable lady in her mid forties, he was led to a hall where he recognised the man waiting for him to be Mr Jin, father of Jun Xiu’s crush. Stretching the corner of his lips into a tiny smile, Mr Jin seemed wary of Zai Zhong. Albeit feeling slightly offended, Zai Zhong politely returned the gesture with a warm smile.

“I don’t want to dance anymore!” Xuan Na is nearing her limits as she fell onto the ground. Her head is dizzy from all the spinning she has done and her legs are sore from the twirls and leaps. The dance instructor towered over her with a grim face. Instantly, Xuan Na climbed off the floor and plastered an enthusiastic look on her face. “Please continue!” as soon as the dance instructor had her back turned towards her, Xuan Na’s face drooped into an irritated face as she stuck her tongue out at the instructor. What she didn’t realise was that the dance instructor had captured her reflection in the mirrors, and spun around sharply to glare at Xuan Na in warning.

Sprawled on his bed, Jun Xiu bore into the eyes of his stuffed dolphin. He could see his reflection in its glassy, beady eyes. His lonely reflection. A reflection of his dull life. He pushed the toy off his bed with a wave of his hand. It was a birthday present for his twelfth birthday, his first year away from home. Suddenly, he felt the air surrounding him growing scarce. Gasping for air, his hand tightened around the material of his shirt. Fear was clearly written across his eyes. He fears death. He fears dying a lonely death.

Taking in huge mouthfuls of air, Jun Xiu attempted to pacify his shortage of oxygen. Slowly, the tightness around his chest lifted and he regained his rhythmic breathing. Tears swam in his eyes, yet he held them in. He was suppressing his emotions, and he knew it was bad for his condition. But he just couldn’t release it. Reaching his shaking hand towards the toy which was lying on the floor, he inched himself forward bit by bit off the bed. With a suddenly loud ‘thud’, he fell onto the floor, and his held tightly in his embrace was the dolphin…

Massaging his temples, Zai Zhong got into the car. It has been quite a difficult job trying to convince Mr Jin to perform for the young master’s birthday party, but his eloquent talking did the trick. Now what’s left is just to talk the old master and madam into agreeing with the plans. Just as he was about to pull the vehicle onto the road, he spotted Xuan Na from his rearview mirror. She seemed out of sorts and worn out. Debating with himself on whether to make use of this chance, he called out for her just as she walked past the car. “Miss! Would you mind sparing me a minute?”

Checking the guy from head to toe, Xuan Na confirmed that the man was not an acquaintance. She immediately raised her guards and took a few steps back. Glancing at the car he droved, she recognised it as the car which drives pass the VPT daily. Recalling how the car would drive pass their place without fail for six years straight, she huffed. Ever since the first time she saw the car, she has been upset. Perhaps one would think she’s being a busybody, but that’s just the way she is. She dislikes people who flaunts their wealth unnecessarily. She dislikes people who are incapable of relying upon himself, always having to depend on others. And in her eyes, the young master whom this man is serving is in that category.

“Miss Jin, I’m wondering if I can make a request with you.” Zai Zhong started.
“What request? If you’re talking about a performance, I’m sorry, but you’ll have to talk to my father. If there’s nothing else-”
“I’ve already talked to your father about the performance. However, I just realised that there’s something I’ve missed out. You’ll have to be the main puppeteer that day. Well, I hope you have a good day ahead, Miss Jin!” having achieved his aim by cutting into her sentence and taking her by surprise, Zai Zhong felt a smirk growing on him. Before she could reply, he hopped onto the car and sped off.

As soon as he arrived at the mansion, Zai Zhong almost had the fright of his life. Lying unconscious on the porch was Jun Xiu, and a few feet beside him laid his dolphin toy. “Young master! Jun Xiu!” gathering the limp young master, Zai Zhong ran into the house and placed him gently on the couch before dialing for the physician. “Young Master Jin has fainted. Please come over A.S.A.P!” after hanging up, Zai Zhong went back to the porch to retrieve the forgotten toy. Looking intently at the dolphin, Zai Zhong felt wretched. Watching the young master which he has guarded over ever since he was a kid, growing up with him, he knew how lonely and at lost the young master must have felt earlier on. And yet as his personal attendant, he wasn’t at the young master’s side when he needed him.

“Pa, why do we have to perform for that Jin Jun Xiu person? I don’t like him.” Xuan Na exclaimed bluntly when her father told her to accept the arrangement of being the main puppeteer for the show. Although Xuan Na had wanted the chance badly, she still felt that she was going against her beliefs by performing for the rich brat. “All he does is being chauffeured around. We hardly see him in the village too. Although he lives in this village, it really feels like he’s living in another different world from us! His place is so far from the heart of the village, he doesn’t even mingle with us. I bet he treats himself as a high and mighty royalty.” Xuan Na went on blabbering when she noticed no evident reaction from her father. Still, her father’s face remained solemn as he polished his shoes. Xuan Na stamped her feet against the wooden flooring of the house and made her way outside angrily.
