Pulling the zip of her luggage close, a satisfied smile hung on Jin Yu bin’s lips. Her fiancé sat cross-legged on the couch sited at the far end of her spacious bedroom, focused on his medical books. Sitting down beside the luggage on her canopy bed, she observed how his eyebrows would knit together and then relax, then knit together again as he flipped through the thick book on his laps. Allowing herself to drop backwards onto the soft bed, Yu Bin spread her arms apart as she thought about how grateful she is for having her fiancé by her side.
. I’m so lucky to have met you, Chang Min. If not for you, perhaps I’d still be the rebellious me. You’re the best thing that happened to me after I left China.

“Yu Bin, look at this.” Jun Xiu grinned as he pointed to the empty space between his two rows of teeth. “I dropped a tooth! Zai Zhong says the tooth fairy will visit me if I put this below my pillow tonight. Let’s stay up together and wait for the fairy to appear!” Yu Bin nodded her head enthusiastically at her cousin’s suggestion. They were of the same age, and they always spent their holidays together. Shifting so that Jun Xiu can sit beside her on the swing, Yu Bin then proceeded to tell him the funny events that happened yesterday in kindergarten…

“Yu Bin, let’s play ball!” Jun Xiu squealed happily as he threw his newly-brought softball towards her. Catching it neatly, Yu Bin threw it back at him. Zai Zhong clapped and cheered as the two engaged in their games. Watching the kids play in the lawn from the study, the parents nodded their head in satisfaction at how well their kids are getting along. After all, the responsibilities of the family business will fall upon them when they are of age. They must be able to live harmoniously and strengthen the Jin empire.

“Yu Bin, what’s wrong with you? Why aren’t you talking to me? Yu Bin…” Jun Xiu’s eyes brimmed with tears that are threatening to spill any minute. He tugged at her dress, poked her arms, and even tried the dolphin screech which always made her laugh, but all came to naught as she remained stone-faced. “Go away, loser. I don’t want to be friends with you anymore. Stop talking to me. Do you know you’re really irritating?” Yu Bin rolled her eyes before strutting away. Jun Xiu broke down into tears which blurred his vision of her retreating back view. Zai Zhong hugged him tightly and tried to soothe his young master by humming a song. Too late. Jun Xiu’s tender heart had been shattered.

After completing his basic studies, Jun Xiu was sent to a rural village where Zai Zhong would look after his daily needs and send and fetch him from school in the city. He was only eight years old at that time, and Zai Zhong was merely fifteen. His parents had enough of the strange illness that followed Jun Xiu and fed on his soul. He was their son, but there is a limit to one’s level of acceptance. Jun Xiu has stretched their limits too far. Soon after, they migrated to the U.S to join Yu Bin’s family who has already been living there for many years. Jun Xiu never saw much of his family again.

“Jun Xiu, I’m sorry…” Yu Bin mumbled as she tossed and turned in her bed. “Sorry…” Yu Bin flipped and knocked against her luggage which was still on her head. She let out a cry of pain and jolt awake. Rushing to her side, Chang Min looked at her concernedly. “Are you alright?” Chang Min inspected her arms and legs tenderly. Yu Bin smiled as she was reminded once again of her good fortune. Her smile soon fade as she recalled the dream on her childhood. She was in her rebellious period at that time, and that was the reason why she treated Jun Xiu that way. In fact, she was unkind to everyone around her. This situation dragged on until she grew up into a fair maiden, until she met Chang Min who changed her life.
Does Jun Xiu still remember me? Will he be surprised when I show up in China for his birthday this year?

Shaking his head, Zai Zhong gently pulled the photo album out from under Jun Xiu. Tucking him carefully into the warmth of the blanket, Zai Zhong settled himself on the wooden planks which formed a platform in Jun Xiu’s room. Leaning himself against a beanbag, he propped the photo album on his knees. Memories of their childhood came flashing back as he flipped through the album. Young master used to have someone apart from him. Young mistress Yu Bin has always been like a close friend to young master. Although her family lived in the U.S, she always made it a point to visit whenever it was holidays. And especially since she was the same age as young master, they clicked instantly. Zai Zhong sighed as the unhappy scenes committed to his memory returned. If only young mistress Yu Bin did not leave, perhaps Jun Xiu wouldn’t be like this now. There might’ve be hope for him…

After seeing her fiancé off, Yu Bin went to the kitchen in search of her personal attendant. “Wen Xuan, where are you?” Yu Bin called out as she stepped into the humongous kitchen where the cleaners were busy scrubbing the greasy place after a day’s work. One of the cleaner’s bowed in respect before pointing to a door. You Bin shook her head and smiled as she realised her attendant must be helping the cleaners in taking out the trash. She was the gardener’s daughter and has been helping out in the garden ever since young. A few months ago, Yu Bin spotted her tending to a injured kitten which has wandered into the mansion. Her patience and warmth towards an animal touched Yu Bin. She took a liking for this hardworking and kindhearted girl, and eventually hired her to be her personal attendant. Yet most of the time, Wen Xuan was nowhere to be seen as she is always busy helping others with their work. Just as Yu Bin started walking towards the door, it opened to reveal a grimy looking girl who grinned brightly when she saw her. “Young mistress!” Wen Xuan ran over and greeted her cheerily. Ignoring the difference in their status, Yu Bin took the initiative to hold her hand and took her upstairs.
I won’t make the same mistake again. I will cherish those around me, who truly cares for me.
