Love Bye Love 【Two-shot】- Part I

* Inspired from K-drama, ‘아줌마가 간다’ and TW-drama ‘Lavender’, although you might not find much link between the dramas and this two-shot.
* Also inspired by a novel which I have read many, many years ago. Credits for SHMILY goes to that novel.

“Yeobo, I can’t keep this baby!” Ayumi looked at Yunho with pleading eyes. “You know it’s my dream to become a successful dancer. It was my dad’s last wish and I promised him.”
“Don’t be silly, Yeobo! We finally got married after going through so much… we knew each other and dated for six whole years before getting married. And now you want to give up our child? Dream or our baby, you only get to choose one.”
There was a long, eerie silence that set Yunho’s heart thumping as Ayumi considered his offer. After what seemed like eternity, Ayumi slowly muttered her decision. “Dream.”
Trying to recover from his state of shock after hearing Ayumi’s cruel decision, Yunho held onto her wrist tightly. “Is your dream more important than our future?”
“But it’s this dream that kept me alive till today.”

Jolting awake in bed, Yunho breathed heavily as he shook off the anger and disappointment he felt two years ago. After their quarrel, he thought Ayumi would give it more thought. But when he woke up the next morning, all he found was a note of apology and Ayumi completely vanished from his life. Despite all those years they have spent together, she simply upped and left him to heal his shattered heart on his own. Bringing his hand up against the moonlight, his wedding band shone brightly. Although he was hurt deeply, he could not hate Ayumi regardless how hard he tried. The love he had invested on her far outstretched any other emotions. He was not that he didn’t want to remove the wedding band that reminded him so much of her betrayal. But rather, it was fate.

When they purchased the pair of rings, the owner told them that the rings were special. If the couple is fated to be together, nobody can remove the ring once it is being put on, not even the person who is wearing the ring. Only your partner is able to remove the ring that shows their bond to each other. For umpteen times, Yunho had tried to remove the ring which reminded him of his painful love, but to no avail. He was fated to suffer from heartbreak.

Yunho smiled as his glances travelled from his work to the stunningly beautiful male that is cooking lunch in his kitchen. Although Ayumi left him wrecked, Jaejoong was the one who came along and mended nearly everything. Though his heart aches occasionally at the thought of his unborn baby and cruel first love, Jaejoong was there to soothe out everything. Even if they were both males, it didn’t matter to them because their mutual feelings are stronger than the curious views thrown towards them. The only regret was that Jaejoong would forever be under the shadow of Ayumi as long as the ring remained on Yunho’s hand. Twisting the ring, it has become Yunho’s habit whenever he is deep in thoughts. Despite the fact that it seems unfair to Jaejoong, Yunho would feel insecure without the ring. Therefore even if he could take it off, he wouldn’t. Does that mean he still loves Ayumi? He doesn’t know too. But he knows for certain he can never erase her entirely from his heart.

“Jiyool-ah, be a good girl. We’re going to meet appa!” Ayumi bent over to pick up the soft toy which the baby girl has flung onto the floor. “I guess our Jiyool is really excited today?” Ayumi smiled as Jiyool walked forward with her tiny, unstable steps. Taking out her Polaroid camera, Ayumi started taking photos of Jiyool and the neighborhood which she missed. Her smile froze for a brief moment as she felt nervousness taking over her. Before her was the house which she used to stay in with the man she loved the most in the whole of her life. “Jiyool, this house!” stopping her daughter from walking further, Ayumi carried her and went over to ring the doorbell after taking in a deep breath.

“I’ll get the door; just keep your eyes on the food!” Yunho shouted as he ran towards the door. Pulling it open, Yunho’s jaw dropped as his mind registered the image of his missing wife. Smiling a little awkwardly, Ayumi greeted him first. “Yeobo… How have you been?”
“Yeo… Yeobo…” Yunho finally found his voice as he returned to reality. Upon hearing the voice which she missed so dearly, tears started welling up in Ayumi’s eyes and rolled off her cheeks. Yunho’s first instinct was to wipe away her tears. The both of them got lost once again in the deep abyss of each other’s eyes. “Yunnie, who is it?” seeing that Yunho hasn’t came in, Jaejoong switched off the flame at the stove and walked out of the kitchen. Snapping back, Ayumi looked at Jiyool who is playing with a strand of her hair. “Jiyool-ah, aren’t you going to greet appa?”

“Appa?” Yunho gazed at the little girl who was barely a quarter of his height. “Jiyool? She’s…”
Just then, Jaejoong came to the door. Looking at the woman, he recognized her immediately as the one in the wedding photo that hung in Yunho’s bedroom. His eyes widened as he noticed the presence of Jiyool.
“She’s two this year. Jung Jiyool, your daughter.”

“Daughter?” Jaejoong remained transfixed at his position as he watched Yunho squat down to Jiyool’s level. Moving forward, Jiyool smiled at Yunho and hugged him, not seeming to be afraid of him at all despite meeting him for the first time. “I thought… you aborted…” Yunho stunned at the hug.
“How could I bear to abort our baby? Our precious baby…” tears started spilling again for Ayumi.
“Why… why now… you left me two years ago and it took me so long to mend half of my heart for Jae!” his sudden outburst sent Jiyool running to hide behind Ayumi.
“Left you? If I did I wouldn’t have given birth to Jiyool. But you… left me for Jae?” Ayumi glared at the man standing beside them the whole time whom she presumes is ‘Jae’. Feeling his throat scorching dry, Jaejoong couldn’t make out any words even if he wanted to. Although he knew about Ayumi’s existence, he always knew it as she left Yunho for her dreams. Yunho mentioned that she aborted the baby, not keep it. His heart ached, but not as much as how it ached seeing someone who brought pain, misery and betrayal to his lover claim that he was the one at fault.

Running his fingers through his hair, Yunho inhaled deeply to calm his emotions. “Give me some time to digest all this information… I will contact you.” He glanced once again at his daughter whom he thought was dead all these years. Ayumi sighed as she pushed Jiyool gently towards Yunho again. “Say bye to appa. We’re going home now.” Jiyool looked at him with her large, doll-liked eyes, blinking them innocently as she waved goodbye. Something within Yunho felt like its melting as he watched her walk away with tiny steps. Yet his heart ached.

***

Rubbing his bloodshot eyes, Yunho thanked god it was a public holiday. In the state he was in, he can’t make it to work and survive the day long enough to get home safely. Just as he was about to head to the kitchen to grab some bread for breakfast, the doorbell rang. Half dreading who might be at the door, he carefully pulled it open. “Good to see you’re already awake! I need you to take care of Jiyool today until I get off. Unlike everyone else, there’s no such thing as holidays for me.” As Ayumi spoke, Jiyool already made her way into the house. Before Yunho could react, Ayumi passed him a bag containing Jiyool’s toys and clothes and went off after kissing Jiyool.

“Ji… yool?” Yunho called her name carefully, as if she was a porcelain doll which might break if he raised his voice a decibel. Jiyool reacted by squealing and smiling at him as she ran around him in circles. Yunho instantly let down his guard and bent over to her level. Caressing her long locks of hair tenderly, he brought her close to him. “Jiyool-ah, have you eaten? Shall appa make some porridge?” he smiled warmly at her. The fact that his daughter is alive all along is simply too overwhelming, topping it off with her being right in front of him right now simply took away all of his tiredness.

Trimming the roses diligently, Ayumi had a gentle smile playing on her lips the whole time. “What’s the occasion?” Ye Seul decided to address to her burning question by asking what has been on her mind the whole morning. “We didn’t receive any large orders or make a lot of profits, so why is our lady boss grinning away?” Ye Seul said jokingly. As compared to when Ayumi first hired her as an assistant florist two years ago, she has opened up a lot more since and Ye Seul cracks a few jokes occasionally to liven up the atmosphere. “Jiyool finally met Yunho.” Ayumi could not help but smile brightly at the mention of the two most important people in her life. Ye Seul gave a knowing nod. No wonder Ayumi is in a good mood. She has been talking about Yunho all the time and how perfect it would be if Yunho could acknowledge his daughter. Her dream is finally fulfilled. But there’s one thing which Ye Seul would never understand. Why did Ayumi leave separately from Yunho if they were so much in love?

“Jiyool, you have to dry your hair first!” Yunho shouted as he chased after her. Unlike how quiet and obedient she was when she just arrived; Jiyool is now laughing excitedly and running all over the house, refusing to listen to Yunho. Exasperated, Yunho wondered how Ayumi managed to take care of Jiyool for these two years all on her own. “Jiyool-ah! Appa is tired, stop running!” Yunho plunged towards the couch to rest. Seeing that her appa isn’t chasing after her anymore, Jiyool slowly walked towards the couch, finding it unexciting to run on her own. Pleased, Yunho picked her up and sat her on his lap to towel dry her hair. “So naughty, just like your umma who likes to play the chasing game.” Yunho chuckled. Subconsciously, he had mentioned Ayumi but forgot about how his heart would ache whenever she was brought up.

***

Fishing out the key which she hasn’t used in ages, Ayumi wondered if Yunho has changed the lock to the door. Slowly inserting it, Ayumi unknowingly stopped breathing for a brief second as she turned the key. Unlocking it easily, the door swung open. Heaving a sigh of relief, Ayumi stepped into the house to find the place similar to a warzone. “Jiyool must be the one who messed up the place.” Shaking her head, she placed aside her bag and went to get the mop and a piece of cloth to clean the place.

Finally done cleaning, Ayumi went around the house with a permanent marker and scribbled on everything in her sight. Satisfied with her work, she pushed open the door to the bedroom gently and poked her head in. Lying on the bed was Yunho, holding Jiyool snugly in his embrace as they slept. Ayumi tiptoed in and started working on the only room left untouched by her marker.

Swiftly placing everything in the room back into place, Ayumi took out her Polaroid camera and snapped pictures of the two sleeping figures. Picking out the one she decided came out the best, she took out a notebook from her bag and pasted in it. Writing a short paragraph under it, she then left it on the bedside table as gift to Yunho – her photo journal from when she was carrying Jiyool till now.

***

Making his way into Yunho’s bedroom, Jaejoong stood frozen at the image before him - Yunho and Ayumi sleeping on the same bed, with Jiyool between them. Dropping his keys in shock, he quickly picked it up as Yunho jolt awake. “Jae?” he sat upright and looked at his lover concernedly. Jaejoong simply shook his head. “Wash up quickly and come down. We need to talk.”

Looking at Jaejoong who has been sitting in silence for the past few minutes, Yunho cleared his throat and gathered his courage to break the ice. “Jae…”
“Are you reuniting with them? Now that Ayumi came back with Jiyool, are you going to reunite with them and form a happy family?” Jaejoong went straight to the point.
“I-” Yunho wasn’t surprised at the question, but he had a difficulty trying to find the right answer within him. Ayumi had selfishly abandoned him, leaving him to think that his child has been aborted and that they will forever vanish from his life. Jaejoong was the one who came along to pick up all the broken pieces of his heart and stayed by him although their love was forbidden and he could not give Jaejoong any status. Now, Ayumi returns with Jiyool and expects everything to remain unchanged? Even though a lot of his love has been invested and forked out to Ayumi, she has given him up when she left. His heart ached so much over her precisely because he still loves her. He once thought his life was over just like this, but Jaejoong was the miracle that appeared. Jaejoong… Even though he really wanted Jiyool, he couldn’t let Jaejoong down.

“It is so difficult to choose between me and her? She vanished for two years, Yunnie! She lied and left!”
“But she had her own reason, and I know the reason very well. Furthermore, my love for them already started years ago. You know how much I adore kids too, Jae... Jiyool is my flesh and blood.”
“What if you definitely have to pick one?”
“Jae… please don’t make me choose…” Yunho looked at Jaejoong pleadingly but was met with Jaejoong’s cold and determined eyes. “If I absolutely have to make a decision… that would be you. I’ll pick you, Jae…”
