Chapter 9: Pounding Heart

Putting on her coat, Sohee pulled her hair back into a messy up-do bun and dusted some blush onto her pale cheeks. “What have you done to yourself, Yoo Sohee? You look pathetic. Yoo Sohee isn’t a feeble woman. Yoo Sohee is a bad woman. I’m confident of myself and I always get what I want even if I scheme. That’s me. That’s Yoo Sohee.” She self-hypnotised as she worked on projecting a perfect image. If she can’t fix her heart, then the least she can do is make sure she appears just fine. Even if she can’t get Jung Yunho, she will leave him a strong image as a bad woman. “It won’t be long now. Just hold out for a bit more, and I promise I will let you go, Yunho…”

After submitting her work, Sohee headed to the super mart to do some grocery shopping. She managed to complete the novel way before the deadline, so now all that’s left is to maintain her role as Yunho’s virtuous wife for the remaining time left. Looking at the fresh vegetables, Sohee instantly reached for Yunho’s favourite. Hearing someone call her name, Sohee spun around and smiled warmly as she greeted the other ladies. She has mingled well with the others and they have been extremely kind to her. Everyone has always been nice to Sohee – except Yunho and Jaejoong. “Grocery shopping again? Your husband is so lucky to have a pretty wife come pick up the fresh goods everyday to prepare delicious meal for him!” they chuckled. Sohee smiled faintly. If only Yunho saw her as such a lovely wife too.

The atmosphere between Yunho and Jaejoong remained cordial from their promises as they ate the lunch that Jaejoong prepared. Yunho dug into the lunch blissfully. Jaejoong had prepared all his favourite dishes. “Eat slowly; you don’t want to suffer from indigestion.” Jaejoong passed him the soup. “Drink some soup to wash the food down!” Yunho gladly gulped down the soup. As long as it is food prepared by Jaejoong, he is most willing to gobble it down. ‘I will need to press Sohee for a divorce as soon as possible so Jaejoong can move over to live with me.’

Sohee jolt awake as the clock struck 1AM. Glancing at the untouched dinner she has prepared, she slowly picked up the bin to trash everything. It had been like this every day, yet she still busied herself with the dinner every day, hoping that for just one day, Yunho would return home to have dinner with her. Taking the trash out, Sohee recognized the car parked nearby as Yunho’s car. She could vaguely make out two figures. Momentarily rooted to the ground from what she witnessed, Sohee dropped the trash bags quickly and dashed back into the house. Placing a hand over her heart, she tried to stop it from aching. “I can’t take this anymore… Because of love, I’m willing to lose everything for you, but the more I love you, the more you push me away. Because you already have Jaejoong…” tears clouded her vision. “Can a heart actually explode? Because it feels like my heart is going to explode from this agony…”

Having made her way back to the room, Sohee hid herself beneath the blanket as she allowed her tears to fall freely. Tomorrow her book would be officially published in all major bookstores. Everything is coming to an end, just like the last chapter in her novel had described. Sohee reached to the bedside table and pulled open the drawer. Retrieving the divorce papers, her fingers gently traced her signature on it. It is time to end everything as in the last chapter of her novel.

Eventually, Ayumi had to accept that the man who loved her dearly has moved on in her absence. While she gripped onto the promise made before her family migrated to Japan, Yunho has forgotten the promise and moved on when a better person came along. He forgot about the necklace that he brought with his own abilities, and the promise to Ayumi about building their future with his abilities. Instead, he made those same promises to his new lover and proved to Ayumi that his current love is much stronger than the one he had for her. Finally acknowledging their love, Ayumi had no choice but to step out. Since the day she left, from the protagonist, she had become the antagonist. The space she left behind was filled. As much as she wanted to claim her love again, she can only hold onto her bad wishes of wanting Yunho all for herself and free him.

Wandering around the streets, Yunho sighed. Jaejoong had extra vocal classes to give today and he didn’t want to return home to face Sohee. Although she has been slowly distancing herself, Yunho still doesn’t want to have much to do with her. Furthermore, the necklace she wore always gave him a bad headache whenever he sees it. Recently it got worse, as lights started blinding him while he had one of those headaches. It was like something is about to burst in his head. Stopping his tracks in front of a bookstore, Yunho decided to pick up a book he could read over a cup of coffee. As soon as he entered, he noticed the row of newly released books that were heavily advertised. On the cover was the pendent that Sohee wore around her neck. Checking out the author, he was surprised when it read ‘Yoo Sohee’. Deciding to purchase the book, Yunho wondered what could possibly be written in this novel that boasted ‘#1 bestselling author in Japan’.

Sipping his coffee, Yunho made himself comfortable at the café as he flipped the novel open. Leafing through the pages, his eyebrows furrowed together as the scenes depicted in the novel flashed through his mind constantly. Where did he read this novel before? Why is there this familiarity, yet it all seemed so distant? Was it déjà vu? Reading closely, the scenes in his mind became more vivid as he made out the features of a young girl in his mind. The fogginess clogging his mind vanished as he slowly recognized the happenings in the novel as a distant fragment of his own memory. Dropping the book, he tugged at his hair as the splitting pain sliced through his mind. The flashbacks occurred rapidly as the burst of colours engulfed his mind. “Ayumi…” he mumbled. “Yoo Sohee… Ayumi…”

“Do you think we should tell Yunho about his memory?” Mr. Jung pondered as he saved and closed his file. “Since he’s married now, he should be able to get over that girl pretty soon.”
“He’s living well now, why do you want to tell him about that past and confuse him?” Mrs. Jung looked up from her knitting. “What if he asks us how she looks like? It’s not like he even brought her home to show us before. We’ve only heard about her.”
“But we can’t hide this from Yunho forever. He has the right to know about his past too.” Mr. Jung took off his spectacles and pulled his laptop cover shut.
“Do as you deem fit then. I’m not going to take part in this anymore. Why does our son have to be thinking about some girl who left him and migrated to Japan and never once contacted him again? Yunho kept talking about earning a lot of money and went to audition for S.M. Entertainment and look what happened to him. When he got into an accident we couldn’t even contact that girl and our son has to lose all his memory and restart his life.” Mrs. Jung recalled angrily. “It was all for her that he wanted to get into the entertainment industry so that the girl can easily find him and he can earn a lot of money. But in the end he hurts himself missing her day and night. I’m never going to remind Yunho about this girl!” Mrs. Jung exclaimed agitatedly and threw her knit work on the table. “We told him all of his life as it is. He doesn’t have to know we took out that portion of his love life.”
