Chapter 10: Bad Woman

Placing the last dish on the table, Sohee scanned the table to make sure that all of Yunho’s favourite food has been prepared. Retrieving the divorce papers from her handbag hanging by the chair, she placed it on the table as well and slowly pulled off her wedding band. Leaving it on top of the divorce papers, she went back to tidy up the kitchen before heading upstairs to prepare to leave for her flight.

Yunho slowly leaned forward to pick the novel off the floor and dusted it. Caressing the surface of the book where the pendent is, Yunho wanted to laugh at his foolishness. The empty feeling in his heart was because he missed out on an important bit of his life. She was there right in front of him to remind him, yet he dismissed it. Ayumi returned to fulfill their promise. He promised to take care of her and love her, but he forgot about his promise and thought that she referred to their marriage vows. He always thought that everything his parents and Jaejoong had told him was all of his memory and accepted it. However, his parents left out Ayumi. Why did she return as Yoo Sohee? He quickly ran his fingers through the pages. If this novel spoke about their love, then it would also contain the answers he needed.

Fingers trembling as he skipped through the novel, Yunho came to realise the grief that Ayumi kept to herself. The family was caught in an accident soon after they migrated to Japan. Ayumi was the sole survivor and was adopted by another Korean family living in Japan. They renamed her as Yoo Sohee and brought her up as if she was their own. They never allowed her to go hungry even when their business was caught up in financial problems. In order to repay their kindness, Ayumi strived to be the best author so that she could care for them in return. When he debuted with DBSK, Ayumi was elated because she now knew where to find him and could always remain updated with his latest happenings. All these while she never once forget about him and worked towards a reunion with him. However when she returned, his heart has already been given to Jaejoong. He treated her coldly and saw her as a scheming woman. Snapping the book shut, Yunho sprung up from his seat and dashed for his car. He has to see Ayumi now. He needs to explain everything to her.

“I hope the book sells well. Nobody will realise the Yunho that I wrote about is DBSK’s Jung Yunho right? I even changed DBSK and Jaejoong’s name in the novel… why am I concerned if his fans will go nuts when they realise that I’m writing about him? Since I’m leaving already, this is none of my business.” Sohee placed her novel back on the shelf and made her way out of the bookstore with her luggage behind her.

“Although Jaejoong went through those trainee days where I lost my memory with me, I made a promise to Ayumi too. Those promises I didn’t keep scarred her heart.” Yunho frantically redialed Sohee’s number as he sped back to his house. “Why isn’t she answering her phone?!” he slammed his fist against the steering wheel as he stopped at a red light. ‘Jaejoong knew too little about me since we just started being trainees together when I lost my memory in the accident, hence he couldn’t tell me anything. But why did my parents purposely leave out those memories? If they hadn’t done that, maybe things would not turn out this way today.’ Yunho jammed his leg on the gas pedal as soon as the light turned green.

Grinning at the fresh ingredients he picked up after lessons, Jaejoong slowed his car to a stop in front of Yunho’s house. He had cancelled his last lesson because he wanted to cook dinner for Yunho. Carrying the paper bags in his arms, he went over to ring the doorbell. “Is Yunho not home? But why isn’t Yoo Sohee home either? Did they go out for dinner together?” Jaejoong frowned as he went back to his car. Just then, Yunho’s car pulled over beside his and Yunho scurried out anxiously. “Yunho-ah!” Yunho went right past him, seemingly to have not notice that he knocked into the bags Jaejoong was carrying. Dropping all of his groceries, Jaejoong’s frown deepened and followed Yunho into the house.

“Yunho, what’s wrong with you?” Yunho ignored his question and sprinted upstairs to look for Sohee. Poking his head into the rooms, he ran downstairs again when he couldn’t locate her. “Ayumi, where are you?” Jaejoong followed behind him aimlessly into the dining room. “Who is Ayumi?” Jaejoong bumped into Yunho when he suddenly stopped in his tracks. Yunho moved towards the dining table full of food. Picking up a fork, he tried one of the dishes. It was made just the way he liked it. He continued to taste the rest of the food. “I’ve never once properly tasted her cooking…” Yunho dropped the fork when he noticed the papers at a corner of the table. Recognizing the ring on the papers as their wedding band, Yunho felt his heart thumping wildly as he reached for it. Beside him, Jaejoong looked on in confusion but yelled in joy when he saw the divorce papers.

“She’s finally letting you go! She signed the papers!” Jaejoong shook Yunho by his shoulders as she shouted happily. Yunho remained in a daze as he looked at the signature and the ring in his hand. There’s no warmth to the ring. Sohee must have left this here some time ago. Closing his hand around the ring, he gripped onto the papers with his other hand and ran back upstairs to the bedroom. Yunho pulled open the wardrobe and cupboards wildly only to discover that Sohee’s belongings have all vanished. “No… I’ve yet to explain to her…” Yunho muttered as he rummaged through his belongings. “She must’ve left something behind. She lived here for so long, how can she not leave any traces of her behind? Where is she? How am I going to find her?” Jaejoong ran into the room, baffled by Yunho’s actions. Why does it seem like Yunho is not the least happy about Yoo Sohee leaving?

“She really didn’t leave anything behind…” Yunho finally gave up and sat down leaning against the wardrobe. Looking at the ring, Yunho felt apologetic for not being able to remember Sohee and treating her shoddily. “What’s wrong? Why are you suddenly acting like this? You’re scaring me.” Jaejoong knelt down beside Yunho and held his hand. Yunho looked at him with dilated eyes, body trembling in attempt to control his emotions and tears. “Sohee is Ayumi… I forgot about her and our promise. Now she left… she left…” he closed his eyes tightly and rested his head against the wardrobe. “It’s too late now.”

‘All along, I was just concerned about my own happiness and neglected your happiness. You clouded my mind and heart. I selfishly held you back because I couldn’t let go when I thought I had happiness. It‘s time to free you now if I really love you. If my love caused you hurt, I’m sorry that I love you…’ Sohee gazed out of the plane window. “If we were not fated, why did we meet? But if we were fated, why are we parting now?”
